Dragon Age: Origins

It’s November, the holidays are around the corner and there’s a load of video games to be played. A little game by the name of Modern Warfare 2 (review coming soon) just dropped but lets take a break from shooting Ultranationalists in the face for a moment.

Dragon Age: Origins comes from the fine folks over at Bioware who did the amazing space opera game Mass Effect. This time around, rather then traveling from planet to planet you’re on a trek to rid the land of Ferelden of a demon army.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Review

Uncharted 2 Game Grab

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves wastes no time getting to business - and the game’s business is action. Nathan Drake starts off beaten, bloody, and in a near-death situation. One thing you notice really quickly in Uncharted 2 is that Nathan Drake gets the shit kicked out of him all the time. This humanization of the character is something that stands out and gives the game a bit more of a ‘real’ experience.

Forza Motorsport 3 Review

forza-motorsport-3-logo

Over the years gaming has evolved so much so that playing the games have become almost too realistic. This was most noticeable in the latest title in the Need For Speed series, however once I was able to play Forza Motorsport 3 that all changed.

Forza Motorsport 3 is the most realistic racing game to date and probably will be for a while. Everyone has a dream car that they’ve always wanted and in Forza 3 you get the opportunity to step foot in that dream car of yours. Whether you’re a novice driver or an experienced driver Forza 3 allows you to drive any of the over 400 cars available on more than 100 of the world’s most famous race tracks.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

100209-batman-01

There are a lot of hot games out there this fall but there’s only one that keeps me coming back and back again. Yes, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Hearing about this game made me a bit weary that it may just be another horrible comic book video game but that’s fortunately not the case. The element that grabbed me right away with this game is the Batman universe just comes to life. If you’re familiar with Bat’s world you’ll settle right in and if not, you won’t feel to overwhelmed. You can thank Paul Dini (Batman The Animated Series), who penned the script for this game, for making Batman’s world so visceral and accurate.

Xbox Canada holds an annual event where game publishers display their latest and upcoming game titles. Yesterday Mark and I were able to preview some of the anticipated game titles coming to consoles this fall season. Some of the titles that were there have recently been released including Beatles Rock Band, NHL 10 & Halo ODST.

Some of the new titles that we got to preview were DJ Hero, Tony Hawk’s Ride, Left 4 Dead 2, Forza Motorsport 3 and the highly anticipated GTA IV downloadable episode The Ballad of Gay Tony. These titles are being released soon and at perfect time too with the holiday season coming upon us.

Halo 3: ODST Drops Today

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

halo3-odst

Halo 3: ODST is the latest title in the Halo franchise and is an expansion to Halo 3. Originally it was supposed to be a downloadable title but then it was decided to make it a standalone game.

I was lucky enough to attend a preview event for Halo 3: ODST, which drops in stores today, and I must say it’s an impressive game. First person shooters have always been second on my list as I prefer third person shooters but after getting a chance to play ODST I might be more inclined on playing more first person type games.

NHL 10 Review

nhl10-kane

For hockey fans September is a huge month. NHL training camps open, the NHL pre-season begins and for video gamers EA Sports NHL franchise gets a new release. NHL 10 features Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane on the cover and includes a bunch of new gameplay features & new game modes.

Last year’s NHL 09 was so revolutionary that many believed that it would never be topped. Well with the new additions to NHL 10, I think it just has been topped. New features in NHL 10 allow for better and more realistic gameplay than previous versions. Out of all the new gameplay features the more effective ones are battle on the boards, first person fighting and intimidation tactics.

Read more about the new features and soundtrack after the jump.

Get Infamous

Friday, June 5th, 2009

060509-infamous-3

Infamous starts off with a bang from the moment you press the start button. Cole, a bike messenger, is assigned to deliver a package that ends up causing a massive explosion that destroys six city blocks. When the dust clears, Cole is the lone survivor. To top that off, he discovers he has the power to manipulate electricity in almost anyway he pleases. These powers are great and all that but like Uncle Ben said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” That’s where you decide if Cole will become legendary hero or an evil bad ass. These moral choices are a major part of the game and your decision furthers your rep amongst Empire City. As the story develops, you’ll fully become immersed in this universe and the comic book styling cut scenes give the narrative some style.

Gears Of War 2 Launch

Friday, November 7th, 2008

gears_logo.jpg

For gamers today marks the day that many have been looking forward to, the release of Gears Of War 2. Exactly two years ago today the first Gears Of War launched and went on to be a huge success. Will Gears 2 live up to the first…I think so.

gears_of_war5.jpg

Last night was the launch event for the game, which was held at lower Bay Station, the unused Bay subway station where all the movies are shot in. This was a perfect venue for event since it had bins with fake fire, flickering lights and the atmosphere was very Gears like. With ceiling tiles missing/limbering, exposed electrical wires and Gears Of War 2 on about 20 LCD HDTV’s it made it feel like you were walking in a map featured on Gears that was destroyed by locusts.

The game has been improved in many ways. Some of the improvements include an update to the Unreal Engine 3 which added graphics that are a lot more sharp and crisp.

During the event they had a few solo campaigns going with a huge 10 person multiplayer game going. There were a number of chainsaw attacks that not only drew large crowds around the station but also exerted some screams/yells of joy for winning the battle. I had the opportunity to play a bit of the solo campaign and got through a couple of checkpoints. What I noticed so far is that there is a lot more gore involved in Gears 2 which will definitely add to the excitement of the game. A few new features were added to the sequel that weren’t present in the first Gears. The first is the shield effect. This feature allows you to pick up the corpse of an enemy and use their body as your shield. I can see this being useful during a battle with a tone of locusts.

The second new feature allows you to be recovered if you’ve been shot and are near to death. If you remember during the first Gears if one of your team mates got injured you were allowed walk over to them and to save them, well this feature is the same thing but now it works for the player playing the game. For instance if you happen to get shot a number of times and are near death you can crawl to a safe spot and wait for one of your Delta Squad members to save you. The key though is to crawl quickly because if your enemy finds you down and crawling I can guarantee that you’ll get your head smashed into the ground.

The third isn’t as much as a feature as it is an addition. The addition of new characters, enemies, and weapons will definitely make the story line interesting and more enjoyable. Being a fan of the first Gears there is no doubt that Gears Of War 2 will be a hit and will be a must have for the holiday season.

Check out some pictures of the launch event last night.

Fable II Asks Who Will You Become?

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

fable_logo.jpg

Fable II is the highly reviewed sequel to Fable, which was released nearly four years ago on the original Xbox. Fable II is an action RPG (role-playing game) based in the fictional world of Albion some five hundred years after the first Fable’s time. This time around Albion’s small towns have evolved into cities and large castles and is in need of a hero.

fable2.jpg

Since the game asks the question Who will you become? your first chance at answering this is when you choose the gender of your character. Your character can either be a male or female, whereas in the first Fable you weren’t given that choice. Unlike other games Fable II gives the users more of a choice in how they want to develop their own character throughout the game by giving the character the ability to interact with anyone he/she sees resulting in becoming a likeable or dislikeable character.

fable3.jpg

You start off as a young boy or girl and after sometime you grow up and are on a quest to become Albion’s hero. Or are you? Throughout the game you will face certain challenges and obstacles that will make your character be respected, feared or looked up to. None of what you do will be overlooked. People in the town will react positively or negatively towards all of your actions. So it’s up to you to decide how much of a hero your character will become or run the risk of someone else becoming Albion’s much needed hero.

Throughout your journey to become Albion’s hero you are allowed to do things on your own that will help your character evolve into that perfect or not so perfect hero. You can get a job and earn yourself some gold so you can buy food, clothing and property. You can also trade your goods, steal and flirt with the citizens of Albion.

fable4.jpg

As you progress throughout the game your hero will gain all sorts of skills, strengths and wills by collecting experience that falls to the ground during combat. This experience comes from the enemies you face and can be used to purchase new abilities which will help evolve your character.

So far Fable II has lived up to its reputation and to the high reviews its received so far. I am very interested in how my character will unfold and if he is Albion’s hero. Right now my character is still a young lad who is learning new skills, strengths and wills to become that perfect hero who can save Albion from evil. He also just received his first ability to fend off enemies.

If you’ve picked up the game and have played it enough I ask you this, Who have you become?
