Good things come in threes and there are three amazing First Spins up on The New Music! Here is just a little taste of each…
Fiery Furnaces - I’m Going Away

I’m Going Away finds strong middle ground between their straight-up pop and whimsically prog tendencies. Matthew’s back and forth between childlike piano rolls and scorching hot ’70s psych riffs provide a kaleidoscopic playground for Eleanor on both “Keep Me In The Dark” and “Cups and Punches,” while “Drive To Dallas” ” and “Cut The Cake” take on looser, jazzier directions.
Gah! Sounds like some fun right? Get it all here!
Sean Bones - Rings

Sean describes it as “music that might cause people to scratch their heads a bit, only to realize that scratching their heads would make a good dance move.”
I’m sold. You too? The album is so summery. I’m so into it. Get into it too.
Jónsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps

Sigur Rós fan listen up! Side project alert!
While Sigur Rós is usually recognized for Jónsi’s soaring falsetto that is often sung in the made-up language of Hopelandic, the pair eschew vocals on the majority of the album, save for standout “Boy 1904,” a haunting bit of Eno-like lullaby featuring the choral pipes of the last known castrato ever recorded.
Lovely. Oh so lovely. More loveliness this way.

With so much buzz building around Toronto rapper Drake, and his mixtape So Far Gone still in high rotation on ipods everywhere, it’s no surprise that people are clamouring to find out what’s going on with an official debut album. While travelling to his first hometown show, he told MuchMusic exclusively that he’s aiming for an end of year release. Drizzy’s already been in the studio with Jay-Z and super-producer Just Blaze, as well as Kanye and Young Jeezy according to MTV News, but he revealed that the real work is coming up next month.

[NewMusic blogger Liem checked out Lady Sov this past weekend - here's what he thought of the show!]
Love her or hate her, it’s still my obsession that Lady Sovereign has an uncanny resemblance to Mel C and by the looks of her ensemble last Friday, Dan Levy as well.
Ch-check it out:

Last night I had the opportunity to witness Sebastien Tellier in the flesh, at the MOD club. I was so excited to see him, especially since I was on my 10 day marathon of only listening to his music.
When he got on stage you couldn’t help but notice his very European style, his full beard, long hair and signature black sunglasses. This look made it very hard to believe that he’s only 34.
He didn’t say anything when he first got on stage. He just picked up his electric guitar and started playing his catchy electro song “Kilometer”. The crowd quickly responded with a loud cheer. We were all so excited to begin the Sebastien Tellier sultry ride.
He eventually greeted the crowd, started telling us jokes (He’s very funny) and went straight to his bottle of white wine, that was sitting on his keyboard and poured himself a glass, which he would repeatedly go back to after each song. He loves his wine!

His performance was excellent! He would wale out on his electric guitar, go off on some crazy solos and then create a smooth sultry symphony on his keyboard. He played a lot of his electro hits at the beginning of the show, while thrusting at his guitar, seducing the mic stand and waving his fingers in the air, as though he was touching long flowing hair.
Towards the end he played “La Ritournelle”, one of the most beautiful love songs and “Lamour et La Violence”, which caused a tear to run down my face. There’s something about his French voice that I love. Maybe it’s his accent…I’m a sucker for accents.
Over all, he made me feel sexy, he made me feel happy, he made me feel sad, he just made me feel!
Check out his latest album Sexuality, which was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk.

Usually when you grow up overly engrossed in something, you often shun whatever that obsession is the first chance you get. That was the case with me, growing up in a Scottish home. If I never have to hear another set of bagpipes in my life, I think I’ll be just fine. However, every so often I’m filled with ancestral pride, and on Friday night it took the form of fellow Scots Glasvegas. Rocking out with full Scottish twang (okay mumbling) intact, the boys (and girl) effectively preached to a gleeful congregation at the jam-packed Mod Club in Toronto.

Openers Von Iva, whom I sheepishly admit had NO clue about, put on a great opening set. This girly threesome consisted of three very talented ladies, Rebecca “Bex” Kupersmith on a variety of synths (very much the female Martin Gore), Kelly “Lay Lay” Harris on drums (with the BEST pipes I’ve seen outside a gym), and singer Jillian Iva who pranced and preened her way through a 45 minute long set. Despite having no more in common with Glasvegas than a female drummer, Von Iva would have been a perfect fit as openers at something more like a Gossip concert. Regardless of the mismatch, these gals worked it. Period. Leading lady Jillian strutted her stuff on and off stage, like Tina Turner with a dash of Melissa Etheridge, and belted out one sultry tune after another. Think electro-pop-funk-soul-rock. Very 80s meets 2010.
After a lengthy intermission (ummm, when did everyone in the world suddenly grow over 6 feet?), on came the lads and lassie of Glasvegas. They heralded in their fine set with big tune Geraldine. A fine pick to get the crowd swooning. Speaking of swooning, I could not get enough of drummer Caroline McKay. Call me a sucker for drummers, but the girl stood and banged on those drums, for the entire show. Clad in a black-disco-ball-like tunic, she kept one helluva focused pace for the band and kept those boys going. And go they did. Awash with lots of reverb and quasi-shoegaze guitar noodling, Glasvegas put on a sonic display befitting the powerful, strobe-driven light show. The Mod Club has always had a decent in-house light show, and Friday’s pairing dazzled.

Taking swigs of beer from bottles handed to him from the crowd, and even grabbing and donning a tartan scarf from one eager fan, singer James Allan was one of the most gracious front-men I’ve ever seen. Amidst heartfelt thank-yous and I love yous, he threw out the occasional Celine-like kisses into the crowd. What surprised me most though was how the gig turned into on big choir-like sing-a-long. Now Glasvegas hasn’t been on the block long, so it’s not like they’re Oasis with a legion of fans that spans a decade. But somehow, despite only putting out their self-titled debut album last year, everyone knew the hooks to every song … especially Go Square Go and the set-closer Daddy’s Gone. I swear if I closed my eyes it almost felt like I was at a footy match just listening to the chanting of the crowd (what’s next? Oggy Oggy Oggy??). It was a wee bit strange, but also quite charming and dazzlingly hypnotizing. Maybe it was the crowd’s way of paying homage to lead singer James Allan’s previous life as a professional footballer. Just sayin’.
Set list:
Geraldine
Lonesome Swan
Polmont
Fuck You It’s Over
S.A.D. Light
Flowers
Ice Cream Van
Go Square Go
Encore:
Please Come Back Home
Daddy’s Gone

We’ve been buzzing about a new Canadian artist named Trish here at the MuchMusic for several months now. VJ Sarah Taylor became a fan of her dirty electro-pop/hip-hop/R&B after watching her perform at Honey Jam. Trish’s new music video “Don’t Watch Me” is pure house-party eye candy with a beat so grimy it makes you wanna get a fierce haircut, grab a drink and hit the dancefloor. (And maybe make a semi-naughty home video too.) Watch it here.

Way back in 1993, a young illustrator named Kagan McLeod sent a photo he’d drawn of the Wu-Tang Clan to MuchMusic in hopes of getting it shown on air. He waited and waited, but no one ever showed it. Fast forward 16 years and Kagan is now an accomplished artist with his own comic book (Infinite Kung Fu) and illustrates for clients like Nike, Nintendo, Entertainment Weekly, National Post and Wired.
It’s long deserved, but finally Kagan’s work was shown on MuchMusic when Devon interviewed him for MuchNewsWeekly.

After 26 hours, 2 motel rooms, 10 bathroom stops, 6 fast food restaurants, 4 DVD movies and countless hours of bad American radio I’ve finally made it to Austin City for the South by South West Festival. First indication was the sea of cargo vans converging on the city centre, second signifier was the overwhelming rumble of music being blasted from every bar that lines 6th street. Continue Reading »

In the folds of the busy city of Toronto resides a gem of an independent label called Out of This Spark. Home to some of the most exciting artists this city has seen (my opinion of course), Stuart Duncan, the lone troubadour in this operation, has collected a roster of artists that span a textural landscape of genres. From Forest City Lovers, whose sounds echo a more sinister and reserved Belle and Sebastien to the D’Urbervilles thrashing post punk to Timber Timbre whose ghostly reverberations channel a devil-eyed Lead Belly you are sure to find something that suits your musical tastes. I strongly recommend listening to Timber Timbre’s self-titled album – it has become a staple in my headphones.

We have nothing but love for a Canadian rapper by the name of Drake, who’s rhyming side-by-side with Lil Wayne on stages all over the world. He was a tad tardy for our interview (watch it here!), but showed up at Toronto clothing boutique Nomad ready to talk about whether he’s an artist or a product (his answer may surprise you), and what his conversations with Wayne are all about.
We’ve been burning his new mixtape So Far Gone, along with the 300,000 other people who’ve also downloaded it for free. Here’s a peek at what Drake revealed to MuchMusic.. Continue Reading »
