After a year of guesses, offers, negotiations, and putting wishes into the universe (just me?) the two leads for the 50 Shades of Grey film adaptation have finally been cast. Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam has landed the lead role of billionaire Christian Grey in the S&M book series with actress Dakota Johnson starring opposite as shy college student Anastasia Steele.
Hunnam, 33, beat out a number of actors to play the 27 year old playboy, including Ian Somerhalder, Aaron Johnson, Armie Hammer and Alex Pettyfer, who were reportedly some of the names being thrown around. Rumoured female leads have included a number of young Hollywood actresses, including Emma Watson, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale and Selena Gomez.
The trilogy’s author, EL James, shared the news this morning on her Twitter accounting, tweeting “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”
James’ announcement has apparently been met with some criticism, leading the author to follow up with the tweet “To all the supporters, lovers and haters – thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you.” The film’s producer, Dana Brunetti, also chimed in on the discussion, tweeting “There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”
We decided to go straight to the man behind the whips and get Charlie Hunnam’s take on how his decision to play Christian Grey came about.*
When first presented with the role, Hunnam was all like, um, seriously? I’m in a biker gang and fight aliens in a giant robot body.
But then he was like, wait a minute, I was in Queer As Folk. I know how to make out on camera.
But he still wasn’t sure, so he talked it over with Katy Sagal, because fankly, if you have the chance to talk ANYTHING over with Katy Sagal, you do it.
He still wasn’t sure, so he checked with her husband Kurt Sutter to compare their buffness.
If he’s buffer than the guy who snagged Katy, then he must be buff enough to play Christian Grey, right?
Then he laughed because he’s seen Pacific Rim and OBVIOUSLY he can star naked in three movies and EVERYONE will see it.
Wait, how much did Robert Pattinson make for that Vampire trilogy? Sign him up. No brainer.
*Okay, we didn’t actually talk to Charlie, but if he asks anyone for our number, PLEASE give it to him.Tweet
