I would like to begin this news piece by saying that it is my belief that teleprompters should become mandatory whenever singing the National Anthem. Time and time again people have flubbed the words to the Star Spangled Banner only to be later crucified by the media. This weekend’s victim is none other than Christina Aguilera.
While performing the National Anthem at yesteryday’s Super Bowl 45 in Texas, the Bionic singer missed the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming” and instead repeated and misquoted the line “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming” (‘watched’ should have been ‘hailed).
The singer released a statement following the misstep, saying “I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of it’s anthem still came through.”
If we can forgive the multitude of missed passes, turnovers, and less than spectacular playing in last night’s Super Bowl I think we can forgive Aguilera.
