Miley, Charlie and more!
January 9th, 2014
During Billboard’s recent Women In Music event, R&B star Janelle Monae was presented with the Rising Star award, but that wasn’t the only form of flattery she received. Glasgow synth-pop band Chvrches were also at the event and took to the stage to doing a special cover of Monae’s first single Tightrope.
Even though Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry prefaced their performance by telling the audience she and Monae discussed this cover beforehand, she still appeared a bit anxious about the task. “If you do hate it, pretend that you don’t because it would help my spirit,” Mayberry tells Monae, who was sitting at a nearby table.
Chvrches killed it, though, putting their own spin on the 2010 hit song. Pared down by simple drum machines, synths and a guitar riff reminiscent of The xx, the Scottish trio’s version may not be as uptempo as the original, but it’s definitely a refreshing take on Monae’s most successful track.
AND LOOK, JANELLE APPROVES. LOOK AT HER DANCING ALONG TO THE PERFORMANCE. (She also ran over to hug Mayberry as soon as the band finished.)
