The company that manages Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival, Goldenvoice, has decided to move the festival out of Indio, California, its home of thirteen years. Why are they making the move? The state of California is toying with the idea of an $18 ticket tax which would significantly raise the costs of producing Coachella and any future festival in the state. It’s reported that the promoters of Coachella aren’t happy with the idea of the tax and it seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as the promoters have expressed how ungrateful the state has been for the tourism dollars brought to the city. It is estimated that Coachella brings in around $800,000 in ticket fees, the sales tax off of $9 million in food and beverage sales, and around another $800,000 for transient occupancy tax. So, where are we going to watch Rihanna, Katy, or a Holopac next? The people behind Goldenvoice might not know yet – but you can buy tickets now.
