As a thank you to to their millions of fans (Coldplay was #1 on the list of bestselling albums worldwide in 2008), Coldplay are planning to release a live album this coming suffer and offer it to stadium gig-going fans for free.
Chris Martin says the album would be his gift to fans during ‘hard economic times.’ The band is in the midst of working out the legal (read: label) glitches, but essentially fans would receive a CD in exchange for a ticket at each of a selection of shows.
Depeche Mode did things a little differently on their most recent Playing The Angel tour - if you headed to the merch booth at a show of your choice, you could pre-pay for a high quality recording of the show you were about to attend. Presumably this is to minimize the number of shitty bootlegs floating around, but imagine what a nice ’souvenir’ that would be after a brilliant show? I remember the lineups being MASSIVE for these things, with many fans going to multiple cities to buy the live recordings as collectors’ items.
