Last night New York indie band Cults played to a packed crowd at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. Still touring for their debut self-titled album, the band certainly did not disappoint. Following an unexpected long intro, Cults emerged on stage to a roar of cheers and got a bigger ovation when they opened with one of their hits Abducted.
From that moment on lead singer Madeline Follin, Brian Oblivion and the rest of the band were on their A game. Not only did Madeline sound great but her onstage swaying was addicting and influential as halfway through their set the majority of the crowd was swaying just as much as she was.
Besides playing Abducted, Cults played stand out tracks You Know What I Mean, Oh My God and Rave On. They also played a cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1988 hit Everybody Knows which sounded amazing and is a shame that it’s not on the album. But what got the crowd really going was their hit single Go Outside. At this point it was nearing the end of the show the minute they started playing Go Outside the crowd went nuts!
Having only one album it was no surprise that the show was a short one and although they announced that they weren’t playing an encore was kind of a let down but then again they do only a certain amount of live material to play. In the end Cults put on a great show and look forward to seeing them the next time they’re in town.
