Dear John Review

February 10th, 2010

Hot Channing

Like many of the girls and woman across North America this weekend, I decided to check out the new romantic flick Dear John, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. I’m not sure if it had anything to do with the majority of the male population staying home to watch the Super Bowl, but Dear John beat out Avatar for the #1 spot at the box office! If you were watching the Super Bowl, or just had no interest in seeing this one (at least in theaters), Here’s 3 reasons why you should!

1) Channing Tatum + Amanda Seyfried = HOT duo.
Ever since Mean Girls and She’s The Man, I’ve thought that both of these actors were super talented as individuals. Channing plays John Tyree, a sensitive army boy, and Amanda plays Savannah Curtis, an innocent college student. Despite the fact that these roles are very different from the roles these two are known for, they absolutely pull them off. What really impressed me was their chemistry. You would have no idea Channing is married and Amanda has a boyfriend!

2) It’s not entirely a love story.
When I first heard of this movie, I thought…chick flick, and yes, I was right. Although this is definitely not one to see with the guys, the plot is much more than your typical boy-meets-girl storyline. The movie also focuses on the John’s relationship with his autistic father, and Savannah’s relationship with Allan, her 10-year-old autistic neighbor. The plot has some interesting twists and turns, and you may think you know what’s going to happen at the end. You don’t. I don’t want to give anything away, but this one is pretty unique.

3) One word. Kleenex.
Ok, I admit…I cry a lot at sad movies. But this, this movie definitely has some sad parts that everyone cries at. At one part, there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre. I think that if a movie can make you cry, it’s done its job. It means you’ve connected with the characters, and have felt their pain, you know what I mean? Seriously, if you’re going to go see the movie, you might want to stash some tissues in your bag. Trust me on this one…wiping your face with your sleeve is not only embarrassing, but also extremely uncomfortable.

So, I would recommend this movie to anyone who’s up for a good ‘ol novel made into a movie, classic chick flick with a twist. Not recommended for? People who can’t stand sappy movies. Personally, I can’t stand the sap, but absolutely fell in love with this movie. Although it is definitely not Oscar-worthy, it’s pretty solid. I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Have you seen the movie? Plan on seeing it? What did you think?
