Sometimes when the creators of movie posters for romantic comedies are struggling to find a meaty concept, there’s nothing they can do but fall back on an old faithful: The Lean.

You’ve seen The Lean. Often the male half is outfitted in a suit, a “what do I know?!” look on his face; the woman looking devilish and in charge. The Lean itself most often tells us that the persons shown will meet each other, encounter some problems and eventually fall in love. They might hate each other in the beginning, but we all know what happens in the end. The Lean never lies.

Now, I wonder who originated The Lean? Was it Pretty Woman that revolutionized the rom-com poster? Or will we find a suave Cary Grant peeking over his shoulder at his leading Grace Kelly?
