Define “Retro”

So how old does a song have to be to be considered retro?

I’m a big fan of Classic Rock. But that’s classic - which apparently means “way older than retro”. Now and then a song will air on Q107 that makes the turntables in my head scratch…Whaaaa? Then I have to think about what year the song was actually released. Usually they are a lot older than they feel.

I LOVE having MuchMoreRetro on in the background at work. It’s always good for memories, laughs and usually the odd groan. I love seeing Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, Madonna and G’NR videos played in the same hour as New Kids On The Block, Tiffany and Paula Abdul.

Then all of a sudden, I am confused but delighted to see vids by Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Weezer, Alice In Chains, Nirvana and Green Day. Sometimes they hit my Britpop sweet spot and play some Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede.

Are we pushing the line a little here, or am I in serious denial that I’ve grown quite a bit older? All these awesome tunes that got me through high school are now tossed into a “retro” 90’s grunge pack.

Yeah, I’m probably in denial. I would say 10 years is reasonable to be considered “the past” in the music biz - and that would put us at 1997. Geez, isn’t that when Billy Corgan had hair?

It may sound like I’m complaining, but I’m not! Where else am I going to see Black Hole Sun, In Bloom, The Perfect Drug, Cherub Rock and Parklife?

Yes, I know. YouTube. MuchAXS. I can watch them all over the damn
‘net. That’s one of the reasons you don’t see as many music videos on television these days. But I think you might agree with me that just like your favourite song sounds way better on the radio, there’s nothing like flippin’ through the channels and stumbling upon a video that makes everything in your life seem great for four whole minutes.

  1. i’ve actually had discussions on this subject with a few of my friends. I always tell them that the earlier songs by Green Day,RHCP,RATM,Blink-182, Smashing Pumpkins will be the songs on classic rock stations one day. Of course they think that Metallica, Van Halen, and AC/DC are the only bands that will ever be played on Q107, but in 10 years time, do you honestly think that Van Halen will played as much as some of the original Green Day? Fat Chance

  2. heheh yeah by then, Van Halen will be on the oldies stations! LOL
