Degrassi Music 3: Young Blood

July 20th, 2011

Love the music on Degrassi? Wanna find out how the amazing Music Supervisors behind your fave show pick the songs for each episode of Degrassi? MuchMusic brings you the exclusive behind-the-scenes scoop on how each song is chosen! You can listen to songs from every episode of Degrassi here!

Young Blood by The Naked & Famous
Clare and Jenna get ready for school.

The Naked & Famous are an amazing band. So much energy, so much amazing instrumentation and synth, and really rad lyrics to boot. They were perfect to kick off the new school year and introduce a bunch of new characters. After introducing the newest, youngest character, Tyson, we move on to see Clare and Eli, sharing an awkward moment, and the song covers it superbly.

Jigsaw by Broken Bricks
Clare makes a scene in Above the Dot.

A really cool indie band from Toronto, we came upon this demo recording of this song. There is a full band recording, but this one was so raw, so genuine, that we preferred to place it over the full band. Above the Dot is a new hangout for the kids of Degrassi, and this music sets its tone. The lyrics hit perfectly with Clare’s rampant emotions, and Eli’s lack thereof, but it’s mostly the one-take, life off the floor feeling that sold us on this placement, as it directly relates to all the emotions of the scene.

Oh My, What A Fine Day by Behind Sapphire
Jake and Clare’s first kiss!

This song had been on our radar for a while and this perfect moment came up and it just felt so right. The beautiful imagery behind the kiss, the nighttime air and the flickering lights in the background, coupled with this song, all became the mystical cloud around the budding love of these two characters.
