It was Philip Seymour Hoffman Day at the Soltendieck residence yesterday. As it turns out the movie channel thinks as highly of PSH’s complex acting skills as I do. Finally, someone sees things the way I do!!
My weekend was equally parts selfish as it was lazy. I was in bed with the latest masterpiece from author Chuck Klosterman at 10:45pm on Friday night. I awoke to a frigid wind blowing against my second story bedroom window of my semi-detached Little Italy home (the tiny divide between the houses creates an tornado-worthy wind tunnel in the winter which makes taking out the garbage a feat of strength not completely unlike the kind of challenge one would expect to see on American Gladiators).
Once I finally got out of bed the next morning I instantly decided I was starving and called my good friend Nicole for the easiest solution to my growing hunger problem: brunch.
After brunch I headed to the gym as my triathlon training has started again this year. For those of you who aren’t aware (which I’m guessing is the majority of you), I started competing in triathlons with my father last year to mend a very broken relationship. After my grueling hour and a forty minute run, swim and resistance training, I headed to my friend Chris’s place. Chris and I played competitive tennis together in high school and he’s recently relocated to Toronto so we try to get together as often as we can. We decided to grab some food and smuggle it in to Cloverfield (which was surprisingly good) and then head back to his condo to watch the Montreal/Pittsburgh game.
After watching our habs get completely destroyed by the Crosby-less penguins, we decided to finish the night by watching Torrey Mitchell (our mutual friend, also from high school) play his 20th odd game in his debut season for the San Jose Sharks.
Friends of mine who I grew up with tell me how weird it is to see me on TV from time to time and to be honest I always kind of shrugged it off. But now, since the tables have been turned and I am now watching Torrey on my 42″ screen, it’s insane to say the least. Especially the time they interviewed his father, but that’s another story altogether. As I did the night before, I called it an early night again on Saturday night.
Sunday morning was my previously mentioned date with the different incarnations of Philip Seymour Hoffman. In this case (and in chronological order): Truman Capote, the bad guy in Mission Impossible 3 and Brent from The Big Lebowski (I f*cking love that movie). Movies followed brunch and then more grueling resistance training all culminating to my favourite Sunday night tradition: karaoke with friends!
