Devon: The Most Overlooked Things, People & Places Of 2007

January 3rd, 2008

New Year’s is a perfect time for websites, corporations, authors, politicians, dictators, TV stations and pretty much anyone of any remote influence on society who has anyone’s ear for more than 2 minutes to compile a “year in review” list.

“Best of”, “Worst of”, “Who’s hot”,” Who’s not” etc. I, on the other hand, have a better question “who cares”? Well, apparently EVERYONE.

The human races has always has a fascination with looking back; the good, the bad, the embarrassment, the elation. Perhaps you’ve heard the saying “history is bound to repeat itself”? Not entirely untrue. One of the reasons for which is that everything looks different in retrospect. Everything. I, like many of you, have learned this lesson the hard way, again and again, only to do it….again, get it? History repeats itself…it’s cyclical.

My own apparent historical doom aside, I have decided to compile my own list of “THE MOST OVERLOOKED THINGS, PEOPLE AND PLACES OF 2007“.

Christian Bale and his performance in both Rescue Dawn and I’m Not There: Incredible actor, both commendable performances. Speaking of Mr. Bale, while in New York City for an interview last month with James Blunt at Warner Bros offices, I tracked down a vice president of the film division and harassed him for roughly 8 minutes for an advance copy of Batman: The Dark Knight. No dice. Although he did store our stuff at his office for the day. Thanks Luke.

Croatia: Have you been??? GO. It’s pretty much like how Greece was when my parents were my age. Cheap, hot, safe, on the Mediterranean. By the way, have you seen what Croatian women look like??? Hot damn. Basically, they’re 40 years out of a civil war, not on the euro and happy for the tourism.

Chuck Klosterman: I’ve blogged about him before, basically he’s the new Kurt Vonnegut. A treasure.

Werner Herzog: Now I know he has been making movies for 30 years, most recently Rescue Dawn, which I already mentioned. But if you type in his name on YouTube, there’s a part of an interview where he is shot by a sniper, it’s literally caught on tape. A quick backstory is that he’s an amazing director, but apparently has a lot of enemies. When asked about the shooting he tells the interviewer that “It was not a significant bullet”, which to be honest is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say. Ever. It’s my new motto for the year. Thanks Werner!

Happy 08!
