disBAND: KaraMel

You can see KaraMel on episode 7 of disBAND tonight (Thursday) at 6:30pm ET! (For more show times go here). Here’s what KaraMel has to say about their experience on the show.

Making music is a an intimate, sweat-inducing experience… It’s a lot like making love, really. Soooo, when MuchMusic followed us along our music-building journey, it was a lot like making love on national television. We virtually bared it all to for you CANADA!

Pop music is a weird thing. Writing pop is an art form, but a science all-the-same. It’s a craft that takes research, innovation, and a load of commitment. KaraMel, made up of Kara & Mel (we’re too damn clever), is really just about two energetic performers, playing pop music to make people feel good. Most of the songs were written in a Mississauga bedroom (poorly decorated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer posters) about people the band when to high school with. We love what we do, and disBAND really started what we know will be long journey for us. The only regret we have looking back on disBAND, really, is defying Oprah’s wise teachings, and not always FOLLOWING OUR HEARTS!… I know… would you like some wine with that cheese? But it’s true, we see now, that no matter how hard we wanted to “fit the popstar mould” at the end of the day, the most important thing was always staying true to our own passions and talents. There’s not a lot of pop music with integrity left out there, so it’s important to us to hold on to that, and keep things unique.

We’d like to send out a big kiss to Leslie, our beautiful producer slash former YTV goddess. Secondly, God bless Jonathan, for always being there to capture those not-so-slimming camera angles! Thanks also to the gorgeous Antonella, for being a true KaraMel fan and putting us on the show. When you called us and told us we would be on MuchMusic, we lost our shit, we were so excited!… that was before we knew the show was called disBAND ;) haha, all kidding aside…

We really became like a family throughout this experience. To every one who believed in us, put time in for us, or even called one of our songs “catchy” or “HIT WORTHY”, it means so freakin’ much to us. It’s the simple things, like getting our melodies stuck in people’s heads, that drive us to tread on. We met a lot of TALENTED people who even in light of their successes were all very humble, cool, and wicked to spend time with. This means Janet Castillo (the hot dancer), Jessica Albano (not Jessica Alba… but just as awesome), Greig Nori, and especially the KUYA BROTHERS. “Most girls just wanna have fun, most boys just wanna get some”. Working with KUYA is an UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE, and we ain’t just kissing ass, we mean it.

Finally, thanks to the fans who have been with us since our first recording of “POP”, you know who you are. KaraMel fans, believe it or not, are not just 12 year old girls, they come in all shapes and sizes and we love, and owe a lot to them. Everyone else, check out our MySpace, and bare with us as we record new material and start booking more gigs in Toronto (most of the indi booking agents are used to booking rock bands, not girls in dresses, so it’s hard for us sometimes to find our niche!) Finally, thanks to Bucket Truck, your music is our inspiration. Cupcakes, dice-blocks, pencil-skirts, weaves.

  1. They sound like a couple of wounded cats in heat!!!!!!!!!!The blonde is hot until she starts talking. Don’t worry ladies TIM HORTON’S IS ALWAYS HIRING!!!! Gr8 job judges!!!

  2. Is Simone C Simon Cowells sister?

Oh, and its not a very good allusion: Simon Cowell totally knows what he is talking about.

  3. Has everyone realized that the judges did not even discuss the actual music AT ALL? Nothing about the vocals, etc. Just talk about Kara’s “low-rent busted-ass weave” - very professional, judges.

All they focused on was how ’slutty’ the performance was, when there was nothing inappropriate about it. They had their minds made up the second they saw two young, pretty girls come out on stage. Karamel was amazing, and anyone can see that.

The fact that the song was so catchy that the judges felt they’d heard it before is just proof of how good a song-writer Chris is. It’s a hundred times harder to write a good pop song than an artistic song, and any respectable musician or anyone in the music industry knows that.

Oh, and judges? Calling 17-year-old girls ’sluts’ is SO not cool. Get over yourselves.

  4. It’s nice that all of Karamels friends are supporting them…but c’mon people…that was horrible!! Work on your strengths…don’t conform to what your so called manager “thinks” people want to see. You can see the talent but the package and presentation is just wrong.

  5. how could they tell them to disband it’s still better than 90 percennt of the crap that’s on muchmusic, fuck mainstream shit

  6. “It’s a hundred times harder to write a good pop song than an artistic song, and any respectable musician or anyone in the music industry knows that.”

    HUH?

Hard to disagree with Tony though, well played sir. Just the other night, I saw the “Much Top Ten Countdown” being advertised, and I thought “What makes this the top ten? Is it because these were the 10 videos they chose to play this week? When were these videos on? 3am?”

  7. I AGREE WITH LIFE FORCE 1000000000 % NO ONE COULD HAVE SAID IT BETTER

also, it sucks they got disbanded, but it made for SUCH AN ENTERTAINING EPISODE. this is first one ever i’ve watched without changing the channel

  8. I think that it was fair everything the judges said to Karamel. Had they stuck to their beliefs and stood up for themselves and their music, they probably would have had an awesome performance and wouldn’t have been told to disband. I think their music is good but they should have listened to what the judges said instead of criticizing them.

  9. hey ive been this show and its ok .

what they do is take any band that may or may not have a fan base and turn them upside down .

when i watched the karamel episode some of the changes like the dancing and the new song that was recomended to them didnt really workout since they got bashed for the dancing somehow the manager was blamed for it. even tho the show gives the impression that the changes were nessesary in order to amuse the judges and to not get disbanded.

i thought that was odd .

another thing i find odd about the show is the judges what does a much vj know about signing bands? i understand that they tour the world and interview alot of artist but i dont belive being a good tv personality in a music channnel gives you the right to give politically correct(cough*politically incorrect*cough) advise to other bands. i think i would believe them if they had their own bands with their own record deal touring the world with other bands.

i wastching the soulplane episode and i saw the interview that was done to them the much vj attcks them with questions using a tone a voice ive never heard in interviews ever. Oh now i get it everytime they interview bands that are backed by record label they kiss and take it easy on them so that theyll be able to interview them again in the future . But for the band with no label backing them , well lets just step on them becuz they got nobody than can make our boss angry .

this show is straight up Bull!!

    eat me Much music

  10. I saw the weave girl at the mall this weekend. It was snowing/raining outside. She was wearing shorts. Hilarious.

This show sucks. So do the bands. Waste…of…airtime.

  11. Well i was bored last night so i decided to watch the whole episode on these cute ladies….seriously u need to lose the wannabe songwriter u girls rely on….”your love is sugerfree , zero calories..lol….give me a fuckin break! That song is so …hmmm how should i put it…the type of song you would hear late a night on some chessie informercial were there are fake boobie bimbo’s hustling u to call to get your rocks off! U ladies are young and fit perfectly in the “girl next door” type image….sluts may sell comercially but sluts don’t last long in the biz! I think u guys can go long and far by being yourselves…i don’t think that dude(mr.cry-baby)..has the writing talent to put u in the right direction…now maybe it’s just me but the dark-haired girl and mr. wannabe songwriter look like brother and sister, so if that’s the case…tell your brother to step aside and be a supporter instead of a mentor. Good Luck ladies ! Holy shit i actually said something nice!!!!!!!!!!!!p.s hey diego your 4 page letter made no sense and gave me diariha you moron!

  12. “what does a much vj know about signing bands?”

    Good question

  13. Hi

This comment comes long after the show aired, but you popped in my mind so I thought I say something - of course, popping in my mind, already a good thing.

You both haaaave talent, you both haaaaave looks… the real problem was just developing the song. Work on your live act, get in touch with publishers - get the best songwriters you can, you’re a pop act, that is what they do and how they succeed.

Most of all - and I mean most of all - please find a new manager. I am sure he is a friend and is passionate about being involved; however, the music industry is neither one for friendships or passion for anything other than personal success. He represents you, and I know that you two ladies are far too sweet and loveable to trash talk any music industry professional(s). It’s a small industry, word gets around… especially when it’s on national television.

    All the best,

    Kyle

  14. Wow kara you have an amazing voice

  15. i think karamel was perfect as they were, their image was unique and represented passion for music, obviously they came on the show to figure out what they were missing and the “guru” was suppost to tell them what they needed, who are they to oppose him if they don’t know what they need to make it. Everything the “guru” changed about them the judges hated, he turned them into a pre-packaged pop group. They went from being unique to just another wannabe, dont stop trying and stay true to yourselves because i would totally buy the CD

  16. I’ve seen this episode a few times now and I have to agree with the judges on some things. The vocals are good, really good, and that cannot be denied, but the song choice and the overall look of the band (visa vi the outfits) were just not good enough.

In truth, I’d like to see this band do that song from on the show. Yes, very bubble gum, but I found it far more catchy then Sugar Free and it was the one thing that came with me after the show was over.

Still, I think the band has a lot of promise.

  17. good stuff just keep doing your thing and next time you come across those judges theyll be offering deals not criticism :P

  18. Amazing voices, and yes they have promise. But sadly, very bad attitude on everyone but the Julie (aka Mels) part. And that will be the one thing that will always keep this band from going anywhere in mainstream pop culture. Turning down the advice of pros in the biz??? THAT was just plain stupid! Everything they were doing was to help the band. The too sexy for 17 comments were kinda bs. Because sex is what sells in the media, obviously. The outfits were great, it was the performance that nastied them up. (Settle down girls!) It would be nice to see new women in music NOT having to market themselves as prostitots. Then at least you could call yourself a role model and have it actually be true.

  19. This chick was flat half the time. They weren’t ready. But yeah, I think that the advice Greig gave them wasn’t exactly the best. However, they took that advice, so they need to live with it.

  20. Inigo you know crap about the music industry good for you… so no futher response to your comments which has no valid weight. as fo Karamel… if i was an a&r rep from a label, i would seriously consider them to sign, develop them… they are talented and they got the most potential out of all the groups on disband so far. I am a music producer i would like to work with them, from my busy sked… any other music producer or composers would say the same.

  21. “Inigo you know crap about the music industry good for you… so no futher response to your comments which has no valid weight.”

Thank you on the first part. HUH? on the 2nd.

  22. Aww Julie! I didn’t know you did this you punk ass foo!

You guys are cute, and I didn’t know you had such a good voice, Kara.

    Aw!

  23. i think kara has a good voice, but your music sounds too much like the pop we see on tv. i honestly think greg nori is a crappy guru. he’s the one that tried to change you guys and the judges hated it. keep on getting better, i know you guys have the talent :)

  24. Okay ya i understand that they were being a little to “revealing ” but comon these guys r good and they deserve a second chance because the way they dressed and acted got them disbanded but its stupid. Like I know that its a part of the buisness and whtever but THE MUSIC is what its about. I do think that Mel has to break out of her shell or stay behind the piano because she looked real akward, but Kara has a great voice, i think that the judges should stop loking at the preformance skills and listen to their music skills. Boo the judges, its not the preormance its the actual music.

  25. K dude u wouldnt know good music if it hit u in the balls, if u even have any. So shut ur fuckin mouth u pussy. its not like you could do any better.

  26. Umm…first of all
they only started to talk that because it is true
i don’t think 17 year olds shoulr wear something that loww
and personally i do think they dressed to slutty
and they don’t even look comfortable wearing it
and their music was OKAY not great, not amazing but just okay
plus the judges could see that they werent comfidenct enough
and what they wear does not represent them, like
obviously they wasnt in to the whole change the clothes thing
and maybe they should just stick with like pants and a shirt

  27. KARA; is soo pretty; omgggg!

  28. agreed! thank you!
