disBAND: The Isosceles Project

If you didn’t catch The Isosceles Project on disBAND last night, fear not, cause we’ll have the whole thing online for you to enjoy shortly. Here’s what the band had to say about their experience on the show!

Wow. We hope everyone else had as much fun watching that episode as we did. As much as it makes it look like we hate MuchMusic and everything (which we do), we really have nothing bad to say here. The episode captured everything our band is about, and they let us go on national TV and play a 13-minute song. What more can you really ask for? We obviously have to thank our beautiful audience for coming out to the performance. They’re the reason we’re in a band playing what we want to play.

Our “Preditor” (producer/editor) Adam Rathwell was a stand-up guy throughout the shooting. He and his crew were totally down with our decision to stay instrumental and stick to our guns. We know more than anybody that our band has no business being on MuchMusic, and we’re not at all interested in trying to cater to their audience. But we would have been stupid pass up this opportunity to gain such a massive amount of exposure for our music.

Hopefully, this episode might open people’s musical minds a little. It would be nice if more people knew that music doesn’t have to be four chords and three minutes long. But if that’s your thing, that’s your thing. We are fully aware that the market for our kind of music is small. But it is there. We would rather have a meaningful career playing the music we love to the people who love it than compromise ourselves for a bunch of tweens. Sorry.

So of course, we fully predicted what the judges would say. I guess the footage didn’t make it into the episode, but we totally knew the judges would tell us to disBAND because our music isn’t written for them. Afterwards, the person who was most disappointed in the verdict was Greig! Sure, we were dicks to him at first (can you blame us?), but Greig was fully on board by the end. He is a genuinely nice guy just trying to do his job, and his wig was awesome.

We don’t have much more to say. This episode respresented us as a band perfectly. You all know what we’re about so if you can handle it come see us at a show sometime!

  1. I’m somewhat surprised my comments made it through. Thanks MM.

Sometimes facts hold the truth. Do tell please.

    a) How much money you guys made collectively from your current band? I’m not trying to poop on what you’re trying to accomplish, but lets just hear you say it. Take what you’ve made, then minus what you’ve paid out. The result is?

b)When you are somebodies in the industry then you can use the “any press is good press” quote. When you are trying to make a name for yourself it’s counter productive to sound like you know more than the people who have actully made a living off the music industry. It’s called humility.

Again, I respect that you guys replied to my original comments. I disregard the insults as, well, you have no better comeback so its best to swear and insult in those situations.

I can’t begin to tell you how foolish it looked to be standing there after your performance and say “I don’t care what you think”. It’s comical and something that I hope you can look back on and feel completely ashamed about. In fact I would suggest if you ever do get somewhere in the industry, this episode will follow you wherever you go. And I don’t mean that in a good way. A guy like Bruce Allen would be rolling his eyes at a bunch of clowns who are know-it-alls yet haven’t done dick in the industry. Afterall, if you guys were as great as you think you are, then you wouldn’t be needing a TV show or a station to get some exposure. You think you are great enough as is that you don’t need advice and don’t need anyone except for yourselves to make it. It’s funny doods. If you don’t believe me, then what do you think MM will say when you have a new video. You won’t beg them to play it? You don’t need to cater to anyone to make it? You can do whatever you want and still make it?

Guess what. What did Metallica do? Yeah, they eventually made videos. Yep, they were rebels. Or were they?

To me the best thing you could do is admit your attitudes were way out of line. Again, its shocking to me actually that MM didn’t ditch the episode all together. Maybe they can explain it?

Lastly, not to lump any more stool on this, but I’ve read your bio. Do yourselves a favor. Get somebody with a neutral or experienced background to write it. It’s so self serving its sickening. It really is. But, do keep a copy so that in a few years you can look back on it and say to yourself. Man, what was I thinking?

Anyways, fight the good fight. Good luck with your music and tour. Peace.

  2. Okay, just something I remembered. Don’t take this the wrong way. Walk up to somebody on the street who looks like they might be into your type of music. Tell them your name and website. Then ask them to write it down. Guess what? Nobody is going to get your name spelt correctly. We are all idiots compared to you guys I know and I know we should all know what it means and how to spell it, but…. Well, I’m just saying. If people can’t spell your name, then they can’t google you can they?

  3. Sorry man, I didn’t read any of your posts all the way through, but all I have to say is there are greater things in life than insulting three guys you’ve never met. Go outside.

  4. yeah guys, you need a serious additude adjustment. cluelessru is right! i can’t even spell isosceles…

bwahahahahaha, gg cluelessru. who is coming off as the bigger tool; these 3 wankers you’re attacking in your post or the whiney bitch who wrote the post? Heh, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion i suppose…it’s too bad that opinions are like assholes, as the old saying goes…anyways!

CAN’T WAIT TO CAVE IN SNEAKY DISEASE ON THE 13th!!! stay awesome boys

  5. MAN, this is the only band that i can say “HANDS DOWN” among all the band they have shown in disBAND (actually they all the same typical bands u know what i min).

That’s Progressive Heavy Rock in your face! Sick preformance from the drums, bass especially guitar dude WOW thumbs up!

I disagree with the judge decision,

they don’t understand GENRE of this band it’s supposed to be like that xD. There also tons of people who loves this GENRE, dont 4rget about it.

“It’s all about the money which is sad.”

For me best live performance in disBAND “EVER!”

Wish you all success in the future. \m/

  6. cluelessru you’re clueless. your reality of good music is muchmusic? seriously? your reality of music is making money off of it and having videos played on a stereotypical mainstream music televsion channel? (mtv doesn’t count as one anymore).

you’re just another idiot who believes in the false reality of music. you think this band didn’t gain any positive exposure from this show? your reality is that judges who sign the most cliche done-before bands decide who’s successful in music? they are part of the commercial industry dude. this band does what every band needs to do. do shit their own way, not have the luxuries spoon-fed to them before they even care about the music. i love the fact they are booking their own tours and playing music that THEY WANT TO PLAY. why should they change it so that it becomes more accessible to the general brainwashed population if they don’t like it? their music is highly unique and innovative and the fact that people either love or hate it proves they are doing something right. fuck you and your purist views. plenty of bands have built huge cult-like followings with their “bad attitudes” and have had more personal self-rewarding success than the shitty bands who “make it big.”

  7. isosceles project were one of the few bands that i actually liked on disband! progressive metal is such an intricate genre and they totally rock at it. i’m so glad you guys didn’t change your music to fit the industry, that would be bullshit. keep up the awesome work!

  8. Cluelessru,

You hit the nail on its head with point “b”. These guys may not know as much about the music INDUSTRY as the judges (but then, what more is there to know other than that you have to bend over for your “fans” - AKA, teens with empty suburban lives - and superiors?), but that’s not the point. What they’re about is the music itself, which is something the judges haven’t got a fucking clue about - and neither do you. If these guys lit kittens on fire while they triple-teamed my mom during their performance I still would have loved the song.

…Wait, why the hell am I saying this? Who the the fuck are you and what the fuck gives you the impression that you’re in a position to be giving any sort of advice to any band? The irony is delicious.

Anyway, all I really wanted to say was that it worked. Your exposure stunt has reached me and my brother in Saskatoon and while it’s not the furthest it could have reached (and probably isn’t), you’ve gained at least two fans that you probably wouldn’t have without appearing on this show (or in less time).

As soon as I hit the submit button I’ll be off to check out your myspace page so I can by a CD. You guys kick ass. Hope I get to see one of your shows one day.

  9. You guys were fucking deadly! Keep it up.

  10. I never saw judges that stupid. All these 3 retarted judges listen to lil wayne 24/7 and they can’t open their mind to real music. Even if we only heard 2 minutes of your 14 minutes song, it was still awesome. The crowd was headbanging and were really into it. They wouldve been a mosh but I guess MM are too gay for that. The girl in the middle (judge), said that you would not get known commercially. OBVIOUSLY YOU DIRTY FUCKING BITCH, REAL METAL BANDS AREN’T MILLIONAIRES LIKE METALLICA AND THEIR SHOWS ARE IN FRONT OF A 200-300 PEOPLE CROWD THAT IS MORE PUMPED THAN A FILLED AIR CANADA CENTER. FFS never disband, I’m going on your myspace. Peace out, fuck hiphop

  11. You guys were unbelieveable on the show. Honest to god fuck Much Music and fuck all these people that say you need an attitude adjustment. Music is not about fucking appeasing the masses its about writing something meaningful and creative to you. Fuck the haters and keep on rocking.

    Hard as Fuck, Matt R.

  12. You’re definitely technically adept with each of your respective instruments, I think anyone can see that.
It’s so unfortunate though, that you had to act like little Divas on national television.
I understand the whole “We don’t cater to anyone’s needs but our own and we play for ourselves only.” In fact I think there’s a quote of Scott saying something along those line in the episode (that you play for yourselves only). The only problem with that though is how huge of a slap in the nuts for any of your die-hard fans that is. You’re basically saying that they mean nothing to you.
I think what really made me chuckle during that episode though was how you kept saying that you’re non-conformists to the commercial industry and that you wouldn’t want to change anything about your pristine band for the money, yet, you’ve associated yourselves with Much Music, the most commercial way of exposing your music to Canada. You guys even brought someone else into your tantrum only to totally let him down by dropping him the next day.
In the blog section of this site, you go on to state that you couldn’t have given up this chance to be on the show, but if you truly didn’t care about MM and it’s fans, it would have been easy not to waste yours and their time by simply denying the opportunity.
And to go through all this near-conforming week and actually put effort into putting on a show for the organization that you hate, and to finally just say “Well, no offense but we don’t care what you have to say.” just made you look so childish.
Funny as well, that you didn’t tell them that you “didn’t care what they had to say” BEFORE they gave the verdict. I’m assuming if they had given you good reviews, that you would care at that point.

Needless to say, it’s very unfortunate, since I do like your instrumentally advanced tracks.
You guys just ended up selling-out to a commercial entity to gain exposure (whether you see it that way or not).

I’ll still buy your album if I can find it.

  13. What are you talking about Joel? They play because they love playing their own unique style, and that is why their fans love them. To say they only play for themselves (i.e., their own chosen music style) says nothing about how much they appreciate their fans (if you know them, you know they are some of the most compassionate and positive people you will ever meet).

They stayed true to who they were, and got their music exposed to thousands of people who were likely never experienced a 13 minute song - they gained a lot of fans from much music. They did not care about much music and its fan, they cared about exposing their music and getting more fans.

Selling out refers to compromising one’s values - in this case, their musical style. They didn’t sell out (i.e., they didn’t change their music style). Get your head out of your ass.

  14. Just so everyone knows We got album of the month in metal hammer (The UK’s biggest metal magazine) along side Isis and Mastodon’s New albums.

  15. Ken,
“Selling out refers to compromising one’s values.”

Actually, selling out refers to compromising one’s values in order to gain more income. So in fact, they did sell out. They compromised their apparent values which they made obvious to everyone by going on the program in the first place and trying to gain a bigger fan-base. Some formula for you: (fans + more fans = more $$)

It’s just really obvious to me, and I don’t understand why others can’t see this, that they clearly went on this show with a huge ego, thinking that they would show up and awe the judges and the audience with no negative reviews. Then, in the end when they did get negative reviews, they freaked out and went on the defensive. Saying things like: “We don’t actually care what you guys think.” Well, f***, what the hell are you doing on the show then? haha. What did they think was going to be the outcome?

If you don’t care what the judges have to say, and you don’t care what the fans think, and you don’t care about Much Music, then leave the opportunity to some other kids with a band that DO care about all of the above.

There’s a humongous metal scene with a lot of people who see Much Music and it’s judges the same way that this band does. Maybe go get judged by those people instead?!

Ken said: “Get your head out of your ass.”
I would never compromise my head-in-ass values for you. So no.

  16. The funniest thing about that whole episode was the fact that they edited out the parts where we knew we were going to get told to disband. But we did in fact go on the show because it was free promotion, and it actually helped bring some more bodies to shows and gave us a national fanbase without touring. When we did tour this summer we met a lot of people who came out to support us because of that show. We are never going to make any MONEY playing 13 min instrumental prog songs….but we will get to tour and meet great people, and thanks to Muchmusis there will be people waiting. And for the record I told the judges I didn’t care what they thought because I really didn’t. And I meant that from my cold black heart.

    True Love Always

    Scott
