After turning Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale into mega-celebrities, Disney is going back to high school for a new movie franchise that hopes to introduce a new crop of young stars. The studio, which has earned more than $300 million worldwide from the High School Musical franchise, is developing a new movie called Prom. As the title suggests, the comedy revolves around a group of teens preparing for the big dance. Joe Nussbaum, who directed the Amanda Bynes’ film, Sydney White, and tween-favorite, Sleepover, will also direct the new project.
Disney execs say Prom will likely not be a musical, but they are hoping to turn the film into a franchise a la HSM. Don’t expect any of the current Disney stars to appear in the flick though. The studio says they’re looking at casting fresh faces for the movie. They’re hoping Prom will do for these newcomers what Musical did for Efron, Hudgens and Tisdale. As for High School Musical, a fourth installment is currently in the works. The original cast members are not expected to appear in the film.
