Do Make Say Think – Concert Review

October 22nd, 2007

On Saturday night I witnessed my second Do Make Say Think show. When I had seen them before, they were opening for Final Fantasy but this was my first time seeing them headline.

All I can really say is OH. MY. GOD.

Chills. It was insane. Words can barely describe how their music can capture emotion. Every band member gave their all and the energy was pulsating but near effortless. With a small venue (The Phoenix) and incense burning, the mood was perfect.

One of my favourite parts was how during A With Living, the band requested we take out our keys. They then showed us how these were our instruments and we played along with the band during their next song. Another bonus was the fact that there were just a few minutes between the opening band and DMST. They didn’t have the audience waiting around. To cap it off it was an early show and done by 9pm! After the show I had a quick chat with band member Justin Small (amazing!!!) and grab the setlist:

Rock*
Chinatown
Ontario Plates
Fahey*
Black Sheep Inn
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
A With Living
14/8*
Fredericia
Horns of a Rabbit
Soca*
In Mind

(* Those with stars, I could not find full song title names, despite my best efforts. Anyone wanna help me out?)

Do Make Say Think play instrumental post-rock that needs no lyrics. DMST have that Arts & Crafts feel even though they are signed to a different label. Think Broken Social Scene but more atmospheric (which is fitting as DMST members Justin Small, Charles Spearin, and Ohad Benchetrit are members of BSS as well).

I love how the whole Arts & Crafts family is so integrated. I can’t wait now to see Kevin Drew at the Kool Haus! Wonder who else will be there…
