Doves @ Koolhaus

June 2nd, 2009

Last night British rockers Doves played what looked like a sold out show at the Koolhaus. The trio are on tour supporting their fourth album, Kingdom Of Rust and first since 2005. Going into the show I wasn’t familiar with any of their material except for their latest album Kingdom Of Rust. But after last night’s show that’s all going to change as I will end up getting the rest of their catalog.

The trio of Jez Williams, Jimi Goodwin and Andy Williams pumped out tune after tune playing a total of 18 songs. The sold out crowd was very receptive to the guys when they came out and opened the show with the opening track off Kingdom Of Rust Jetstream. Other tracks that were accompanied by great cheers included Pounding, Kingdom Of Rust & Ambition.

Prior to the show I was told that Doves were amazing live and I figured that they’d be ok, I was wrong. These guys are great live and maybe one of the better bands I’ve seen live. Their sound, attitude and overall feel of the show was amazing. I personally don’t like the Koolhaus as a venue but that couldn’t stop this show from being great.

Not only were the Doves one of the better bands I’ve seen live, but the way they ended their show was amazing. They ended their show with There Goes The Fear off their second album The Last Broadcast where towards the end of the song lead singer Jimi Goodwin drops his bass and starts jamming on a solo drum kit. This went on for about a minute and had the crowd going crazy. The energy level was at a high by the time the show ended and that closer was the reason. There was no better way to end a show that good but on a high note!
