It’s the first month of the new year and all the final 2011 reports are starting to come in. And Adele’s name is at the top of two of them. The British singer has been honoured with having the best selling album and best selling track of the year in the U.S.
Not only was 21 their best selling album (selling 5.8 million copies) but it was the best selling album EVER, beating out Usher’s Confessions from 2004. It didn’t leave Billboard’s Top Ten Album Sales since it was released in March 2011. Rounding out the top five best albums of 2011 were Michael Buble’s Christmas, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Lil Wayne’s The Carter IV and Jason Aldean’s My Kinda Party.
The track Rolling In The Deep also sold 5.8 million times in 2011. It was followed by LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem, Katy Perry’s E.T., Maroon 5′s Moves Like Jagger and Pitbull’s Give You Everything.
This is the first time since 1997 that a British artist has received both the top selling album and track of the year. In 1997, Spice Girls had the best selling album (for Spice) and Elton John had the best selling track (for Candle in the Wind).
The results were the same in the U.K., with 21 and the track Someone Like You having the honour of being the best sellers for 2011.
