I don’t think I’ve seen such anticipation for an album leak in the indie hipster community as there has been for Animal Collective‘s eighth (!) studio album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is officially out January 20, 2009. Message boards everywhere are on fire and people seem to be salivating like crazy waiting for someone to leak the album. They’ve even resorted to posting FAKE download links to steer people in the wrong direction. Every day there’s five new pages of posts asking “has anyone heard it yet?” It’s safe to say hardly anyone’s actually heard it.

If you remember what happened with 2007′s Strawberry Jam, you know the album isn’t going to leak. Basically, a ‘music journalist’ got a watermarked promo copy of the album and immediately after it leaked, it was traced back to that person, who got in deep shit.

So you’ll have to sate your appetite with live performance clips of Brothersport, or just take my word for it that it’s like, the greatest song Animal Collective have ever done. It’s 5:41 of absolutely pure bliss. It’s got about a thousand layers of every instrument imaginable – police whistles, piano, sirens, maracas, bongos, call-and-response – and it’s wrapped up in this infectious calypso-infused beat that makes you want to do a moronic tribal dance and preach about world peace (or something).
