A summer soundtrack.
There’s always that one song or maybe a new band you discover that get’s you through those hot, hazy summer days. UK foursome SPC ECO (pronounced “Space Echo”) was my summer ’08 soundtrack.
I loves shoegaze. That’s no secret to anyone who knows me. There’s been a resurgence as of late of that movement. A nice crop of new bands (“Nu-gaze” as it’s being called) carrying the shoegaze/dream pop torch.
Bands like A Place To Bury Strangers, Serena Maneesh, Fleeting Joys and of course one of my personal favourites, Autolux.
Even pioneers of the movement are getting back in the game. My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver reunited this year for worldwide tours and possible new albums.
SPC ECO is one of those new “Nu-gaze” bands everyone’s keeping their eye on. They’re the brainchild of Dean Garcia who in the 90s was the mastermind behind electro-shoegaze band Curve.
It all started last year when guitarist Joey Levinson contacted Dean trough his MySpace profile. From that, a band was born. But what makes this new project worthwhile in my opinion, is singer Rose Berlin, a.k.a. Dean’s daughter.
At only 16 years old, she’s already full of talent. A chip off the old block if you will. Dean always recorded songs with her since she was 3 years old so it seemed only natural for him to include her in this new project and I think you would agree that her voice is tailor made for this kind of sound. Very reminiscent of Bilinda Butcher from MBV.
Another great underrated 90s shoegaze band by the name of Pale Saints comes to mind while listening to SPC. Dreamy, ethereal vocals, hazy guitars, a beautiful musical landscape
awashed in well thought out feedback.
Anything you would want for the shoegaze lover in you.
Six songs are available on their MySpace page, with So Special being the standout track.
They have an album’s worth of material but right now, they’re looking for a label to release it all. Also, make sure to check out Rose’s solo project. Much more music goodness from this young lady.
