Edge Jingle Bell Rock with Weezer

December 7th, 2009

Early in Weezer’s career front man Rivers Cuomo was your typical geek, shy and not entertaining, however over recent years that has all changed. Every Weezer show I’ve been to from the first time I saw them in 2005 Rivers has become a lot more comfortable on stage and has truly embraced the role of a lead singer. Not only has become a great front man but he has also become a great entertainer! And on Saturday he proved it.

Weezer were on tour in support of their latest album ‘Raditude’ but after an unfortunately accident to the bus that was carrying Rivers, Weezer have cancelled the rest of the tour. Read more about it here.

Coming on stage just after 10pm with an intro sans Rivers, the guys started to play the opening cords of Hash Pipe when Rivers emerged from the front of the stage trough some smoke, talk about a cool entrance! From that moment the energy of the crown and Weezer only got higher.

Sporting a stripped hoody and jeans Rivers worked the stage like never before. Running from one end of the stage to the next, wearing hats that belonged to fans and also doing some photography by using one of the photographer’s cameras.

The whole band were on their A game Saturday night pumping out classics like Perfect Situation, El Scorcho, Why Bother? & Surf Wax America. The crowd really got into by singing along to crowd favourites Say It Ain’t So, Undone – The Sweater Song & Beverly Hills.

In a firsts that I’ve seen, Weezer ended up pulling a girl out of the crowd on to the stage to sing a duet with Rivers for their lead single on Ratitude (If You’re Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You to. It was an interesting few minutes as the girl kind of stole one of Rivers’ lines of the song which caught him off guard but they ended the song well.

One of the best parts of the night was when Rivers disappeared from the stage during El Scorcho only to reappear at the sound deck where a small stage was setup where Rivers sang I’m Your Daddy. He then walked back to the stage through the crowd. Talk about a 360 circle from just a few years ago!

After pumping out 16 songs the guys walked off stage for a breather and came back for an encore. They played last year’s hit Pork and Beans followed by their mashup of MGMT‘s Kids and Lady Gaga‘s Poker Face. During Poker Face, Rivers wore a blonde wig and climbed into the 100 section to the left of the stage and sang with fans around him!

They took another breather & when Rivers came out he started playing Island In The Sun alone by looping each instrument until the rest of the band came back. They closed their show with what has to be their most popular song Buddy Holly, which by far garnered the loudest reaction from the crowd. After being at that show Weezer can only get better. The guys seem like they are having a blast on tour and let’s hope that Rivers’ injuries aren’t too serious so that they can get back on the road and continue to put on amazing shows.

Joining Weezer at the ACC for 102.1 The Edge Jingle Bell Rock were Jack’s Mannequin, illScarlett & Motion City Soundtrack.
