Editors @ Kool Haus

You know when you are having a bad day? You know when you don’t think it will get better and then suddenly takes you by surprise and turns you right around? That was me yesterday, and what turned it around was Editors.

Last night I was so excited when I was surprised with tickets to their show at the Kool Haus. I love their music (see my previous post) and had seen them at VFest, but I knew that a full show of theirs would be different.

The opening bands were Louis XIV and Hot Hot Heat. Louis XIV started things off in their “scumbag-ish” manner. That band is all about the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, (but mostly the sex).

After that, Hot Hot Heat hit the stage, but they were having a few technical difficulties. Eventually they got through it with the crowd’s enthusiasm, and played an hour-long set. I have seen both of these bands play before, and to be honest, I found their sets last night to be nothing special.

Editors, on the other hand…

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!

Godly. As I said, had seen them live before, but this was something else. While the opening bands had each attempted a big entrance to music, Editors just burst onto the stage, grabbed their instruments and started playing Bones. With a mix of songs from both of their albums (The Back Room and An End Has A Start) I couldn’t stop dancing.

I believe the setlist was:

Bones
All Sparks
An End Has A Start
Bullets
Escape The Nest
The Weight Of The World
Lights
Blood
When Anger Shows
Spiders
The Racing Rats
Munich
(encore break)
You Are Fading
Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors
Fingers In The Factories

Editors are a band that blow your mind live. All four members were giving it double their all. Every single note was punctuated was such oomph and dedication; there was non-stop energy. At more than one point, lead man Tom Smith even climbed on top of his piano! In between sets barely a word was spoken. As soon as one song was finished, they would just kick right into the next song, barely giving you time to catch your breath.

I have spoken before about how the band just has this big sound, and in their show last night they proved this once again. Tom Smith is amazing. His voice was even fuller live; it’s just this massive resonating-ly pure sound. When you mix such a full voice with his bellowing tone, it takes everything to a different level. I don’t even know how else to describe it! Incredible.

I can’t say enough how impressive it all was. All in all it was an amazing show that I can’t believe I almost missed! I hope they come back soon because I would see them again in a heartbeat.

  1. I went to the show not knowing so much about the bands (save for hot hot Heat) but, I have to say that Editors blew me away. They have this presence onstage that I just can’t describe. I must listen to them more, I’d love to see them live again.

  2. I doubt they will come near wpg
