The annual North By Northeast festival is currently going down here in Toronto and if you’re anything like us, you must be a little overwhelmed by all of the options of music, films and art to catch! But why take in a festival the same way you’ve always done it. Boooring. Take a look at the eight brand new ways you should try and experience NXNE…

No money? No problem! NXNE is one of the easiest festivals to celebrate for free because of the abundance of free events around the city as you will see in the points below. So put away your wallet and prepare to catch some of your fave (or new fave) bands perform for the low, low cost of nothing!
On a streetcar
For the first time ever, MiO – the liquid water enhancer – teamed up with NXNE and the Toronto Transit Commission to use a local streetcar as a moving venue. The MiO Squirtcar took NXNE attendees along Queen Street West, from McCaul to Dufferin, picking up artists and fans along the way to take in one of the most original shows of the festival. Much was there to cover the action, with our very own Liz Trinnear interviewing artists and fans at each stop!
Through the lens of your own camera
Yonge-Dundas Square is one of the busiest places during NXNE with a jam-packed bill of performers hitting the stage every night. And this year, MiO created a first-of-its-kind piece of technology called the MiO POV. After downloading this app, festivalgoers could project their smartphone point of view stream of the concert for the whole crowd to see so there’s no such thing as a bad view! In addition, MiO offered three lucky fans the opportunity of the festival – to interview their favourite artists backstage! Check out their very original journey here.
At the park
It’s finally summer so of course you don’t want to feel cooped up in a dark, enclosed venue. Instead, go out to Trinity Bellwoods, Trinity Square Park or St. James Gazebo and catch some bands and some rays!
On a boat
Continuing to the trend of moving venues, NXNE hosts a pretty great boat cruise party every year called the Bruise Cruise. Come on, we all know you want to reenact that Lonely Island song…
On the island
NXNE is not only constricted to the downtown core of the city; the festival knows how to go off the grid as well such as this wicked show on Toronto Island featuring Pusha T, Future Islands and Le1f! That’s right: Future Islands…on an island!
There are a number of early afternoon shows during the festival. For example, did you know that you can catch actor Macaulay Culkin’s band The Pizza Underground at the Edward Day Gallery at 10:30 a.m.? Free pizza will be served, too, and how can you say no to breakfast pizza?
…Or really late.
Last call in many venues are extended to 4 a.m. during the festival so not only does that mean more bands, but also more time to party it up!
