Emily Owens is one of a handful of special doctor interns at Denver Memorial Hospital, but really, she’s just an awkward young woman trying to put all her great experience in med school and being the uncool geek to better use. Have you watched Emily Owens, M.D. yet? You should. It’s funny, smart, and so relatable. Ever felt like the underdog? Then you’re gonna like this show. Or if you’re a Meryl Streep fan, you’re gonna like this too. Mamie Gummer, Meryl’s daughter, plays Emily Owens to perfection. Quick, we need a recap, stat!
So Emily walks into “Den-Morial” side-by-side with her med school friend (and crush) Will Collins. They both lean on each other for guidance and support because apparently, being an intern in this hospital, life is like high school all over again. Except this time with scalpels.
But Emily makes a friend in Tyra Dupre whose father kinda runs the hospital. Or in doctor talk Tyra’s father is the “chief resident”. Tyra is a lesbian though. Don’t tell her father (it’s a secret).
And this is Dr. Gina Bandari, who is some kind of big wig at the hospital. But really, she’s the uber-serious bad ass doctor who bosses everyone around. Because she can. And because she can probably give you a new heart in her sleep.
I must say that Emily is a different kind of doctor. She shows that she cares, but I can already tell it’s gonna be one of those things that fail her in the eyes of her bosses.
It’s revealed that Emily’s old tormentor in high school is a fellow intern. And back in school they had nicknamed her “Pits”. Yeah.
Driven by inspiration from one of her younger patients, Emily declares her love for Will… and gets shut down.
Cute Doctor Michah checks in on his intern. He’s sweet. I already have a crush on him. He reminds Emily that life is a lot worse than getting shot down by your crush.
There’s a woman who is signing off on care for her mother and though Emily disagrees, she wrongfully pressures the woman into helping her mother by guilting her into it. Cassandra steps in an rightfully chastises Emily for doing so and shares a story with Emily and the woman about her life and her brother who had Cystic Fibrosis and how his care affected her life (but she’d give anything to get him back). The woman resumes care for her mother and Emily and Cassandra share a heart to heart … but by no means is this a permanent detente between them.
On Emily’s way out, she catches Tyra’s father doing something he shouldn’t be with an intern. Yikes.
Emily and Micah share a moment.
And Emily realizes that it is time to shed her insecure ways and be the woman she was meant to be.
