Eminem hasn’t had the greatest relationship with his mom, Debbut Mathers. In the rapper’s earlier days, there were many instances where he spewed violent messages towards her in his songs and even made fun of her in his music videos, but in his latest Spike Lee-directed video, he tries to make amends with her.
Headlights finds Eminem apologizing to his mom, even telling her he loves her in the song’s lyrics, while we watch the entire video through the eyes and perspective of his mom. From pouring drinks and lighting cigarettes at home while watching her son’s hurtful videos to repeatedly attempting to see her son and getting turned back by gates and security, we quickly sympathize with Debbie and it’s nice to see that Eminem does, too.
The video was shot in Eminem’s old neighbourhood of 8 Mile in Detroit and this marks Lee’s first music video in five years, since Michael Jackson’s This Is It in 2009. Headlights also features a hook by Fun.’s Nate Ruess.
