What happens when the two biggest names in hip-hop come together? They bring the show of a lifetime. So was the case for fans of Eminem and Jay-Z, who gave the crowd at Comerica Park in Detroit last night.
The first of four shows (two in Em’s hometown of Detroit, then two in Hova’s hometown of New York), last night proved that when there’s two heavyweights, there are more heavyweights waiting to come out on stage.
As if Eminem and Jay-Z wasn’t enough, the MCs were joined throughout the night by some of their biggest peers. Drake came out to join Em on “Forever,” saying, “I’m so honoured to be here to tonight. This is history in the making. I want y’all to make some noise for the muthaf**kin’ legend that is Emimem.”
Opening act B.o.B. did his thing for 30 minutes, but also came back out to join Slim Shady for their version of “Airplanes, Pt. 2.” And 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks made an appearance on “Patiently Waiting” and “In Da Club.”
The man who gave birth to Eminem’s career, Dr. Dre dropped “Nuthin’ But a G Thang” and “Still D.R.E.,” with Em and assured the Motowners that the long-awaited Detox is “comin!”
And of course, the two headliners joined forces on their collabo “Renegade.”
It’s hard to believe Jay-Z as an opening act, but he brought an 80-minute set that opened by greeting the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is hip-hop music and this is how far we’ve come… to rockin’ stadiums!Everybody make some noise.”
Backed by a band, Hova paid tribute to fallen stars Biggie, Tupac and Aaliyah, as well as Eminem’s mentor Proof. He invited Young Jeezy for “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune),” along with “Soul Survivor,” “Put on for My City” and “Lose My Mind.” Meanwhile, Memphis Bleek added verses to “You Don’t Know,” “99 Problems” and “(Originator 99).”
They’ll do it all again tonight in Detroit, and then next head on over to NYC for two shows at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 13 and 14, where Jay-Z will headline the hometown performances.
