Emma Watson has dropped out of both Disney’s live-action Cinderella and David Yates’ Your Voice In My Head.
Two week ago, Variety reported that Watson was in discussions to play the Disney princess in a film directed by Kenneth Branaugh and with Cate Blanchett attached to play the evil step mother. But yesterday, Variety’s Marc Graser tweeted the news about Watson’s departure from the project saying, “Emma Watson has decided NOT to star in Disney’s Cinderella.”
Watson also a chance to reunite with her Harry Potter director David Yates in Your Voice In My Head, an adaptation of a memoir by journalist Emma Forrest. According to Digital Spy, fellow British actress Emily Blunt will replace Watson in the role.
It’s surprising that Watson dropped out of Cinderella, considering the recent success of Disney’s live-action fairy tale films, Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful.
Her decision to drop out could possibly be due to scheduling conflicts with her previous commitment to play Belle in Guillermo Del Toro’s Beauty and the Beast. But today, Variety also announced that production on that film will not start this year.
Other than Beauty and the Beast, Watson has no other upcoming projects. She recently completed filming Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring and Darren Aronofsky’s Noah. The former will be released on June 14 in limited release and the latter in 2014.
