Emma Watson took to Twitter over the weekend to deny rumours that she was attached to play Anastasia Steele in a big screen adaptation of the controversial erotic novel, 50 Shades of Grey.
The 22-year-old actress tweeted, “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.” Minutes later, she tweeted, “Good. Well that’s sorted then.”
The rumours heated up on the Internet after the hacking group Anonymous broke into Constantin Film’s server and allegedly released official documents. Among the secrets revealed in the documents from the German studio included Watson as the female lead in 50 Shades of Grey.
Watson’s choices post-Harry Potter have been surprising, but respectable. Rather than starring in major blockbusters to rival the Potter franchise, Watson has taken supporting turns in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and My Life with Marilyn. This could be a reason why she recently dropped out of a chance to play Cinderella in Disney’s new live-action adaptation.
In her films coming out this year, Watson continues to take supporting roles in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. Although the marketing of The Bling Ring revolves around Watson’s star power, the actress confirms that her role is not the film’s lead.
Starring in 50 Shades of Grey would not have been a wise decision for the British starlet. I think it would be too controversial and alienating for fans that still see her as the over-ambitious, bright and innocent, Hermione Granger.
What are your thoughts on Emma Watson’s career choices? Who should play Anastasia Steele in a 50 Shades of Grey adaptation?
