Over the weekend, a new trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into The Darkness was released. This sequel to 2009’s Star Trek reunites Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Carl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood. Cast in the role of the villain is Sherlock‘s Benedict Cumberbatch.
Courtesy of The Film Stage, this is the official synopsis for the latest installment:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Everyone involved in the film remains tight-lipped about spoilers, so even the identity of Cumberbatch’s character is still unconfirmed. Rumours suggest he is playing Khan, a character in the original series and 1982 film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Con. But fans will have to wait until May 17 to find out. In the meantime, this secrecy is just helping to build more hype towards the film.
What are your thoughts on the new trailer below? Are you a Star Trek fan?
