Ravenswood is set to premiere on Tuesday, October 22 at 9E/6P on M3, following the special Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars at 8E/5P on M3. As a spin off of Pretty Little Liars, we know a few key things about Ravenswood and today we sort through the texts and singing birds to give you everything you need to know about Ravenswood.
Pretty Little Liars takes place in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, and the town of Ravenswood is located only a short drive away.
Tyler Blackburn, who played reoccurring character Caleb Rivers in the first three seasons of PLL and became a series regular in Season 4, will be the only main character making a permanent move from Rosewood to Ravenswood…for now.
Ashley Benson will appear as her character Hanna, Caleb’s long-time girlfriend, in Episode 5 of Ravenswood.
The production team behind Pretty Little Liars will also be the helm of Ravenswood, meaning the new show will be dramatic, sexy and shrouded in mystery…and really good fashion.
Ravenswood is based on five teens, including Caleb, who are part of a curse that has haunted the town for generations. That’s the basis of Ravenswood. Now here’s what we know about the town from Pretty Little Liars.
We first heard about Ravenswood from, naturally, a bird. In Season 4 of Pretty Little Liars, Mrs. DiLaurentis gave her deceased daughter’s friends a bird that belonged to Alison’s grandmother. Alison spent time with her grandmother before she went missing and during that time, Alison called the same phone number over and over. When the bird began to sing the phone number in front of the girls, they tracked down the caller to a Mrs. Grunwald.
She’s an elderly woman who previously was a house mother for a sorority and now lives in Ravenswood. Mrs. Grunwald was the first connection to the new town.
Spencer and Toby go out in search of information about Alison and Mrs. Grunwald in Ravenswood.
Spencer and Toby visit Mrs. Grunwald’s last known address, but the gardener says he’s never heard of the woman and quickly makes a phone call as soon as the couple leave the estate grounds. That always means something is up on PLL, so I’m sure the same is true for Ravenswood.
They try their luck in town next, where Spencer recognizes Mrs. Grunwald from a picture in the sorority house as the woman getting her hair down in the local salon. Spencer approaches Mrs. Grunwald and demands to know why Alison spent all summer calling the woman, but Mrs. Grunwald pretends to know nothing about the missing girl.
Proving to be a dead end, the couple leave the salon, but once outside they hear music playing on the speakers set up throughout town…and the groundskeeper shows up again.
They follow the townspeople to a giant cemetery and that’s when Spencer sees Shana. Spencer and Toby chase after Shana, but she gets away in Jenna’s car, although they can’t see who is driving Shana.
Oh, and then a crow drops dead on the hood of their car. Creepy.
Fast forward to the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars and Ravenswood takes centre stage. The girls have been getting increasingly sinister messages from A and the final message leads them to a magic show taking place that day in Ravenswood.
After being attacked by red coat, the girls realize that there are two people acting as red coat and they seem to be on different teams. Spencer follows on of the red coats to an apartment in Ravenswood and finds ‘A’s lair, which is filled with pictures of everyone they’ve ever known and notes about all the events that have happened to the girls and the people around them. Aria notices that ‘A’ even has notes on where they think Alison has been spotted. There’s a wall of computers set up with cameras all around Rosewood that even tap into the police system, explaining how A has been watching the girls and knowing their every move.
While the girls go through the room, someone is watching them behind a poster, though all we can see is the person’s eye. Is this the second red coat who led Spencer to the room? Is it Alison in Ravenswood?
They find a poster for a costume party that night in Ravenswood with a note saying Alison may be there. This costume party is the setting for the upcoming Season 4 Halloween special on Tuesday, October 22 at 8E/5P on M3.
The girls finally finish going through the lair trying to find clues about ‘A’ and Alison and leave the apartment, running into Mrs. Grunwald on the street. She had seen them at the magic show and has been waiting to warn them to leave Ravenswood. Mrs. Grunwald finally admits that she did know Alison, or more appropriately, does know Alison.
Alison had been calling Mrs. Grunwald the summer she disappeared. She was scared and knew that Mrs. Grunwald ‘had a gift’, which I assume means she has some sort of telepathic skill. The night Alison was buried, Mrs. Grunwald sensed something terrible was going to happen and rushed to Alison’s house. It was Mrs. Grunwald who pulled Alison out of her shallow grave and saved her.
Alison was incoherent and terrified and Mrs. Grunwald put her in her car and took Alison straight to the hospital. When she returned to the car after running inside and asking for help, Alison was gone. Mrs. Grunwald never went to the police because Alison, a 15 year old girl (are you kidding me?!) didn’t want to be found.
Mrs. Grunwald hasn’t seen Alison since then, but feels her presence. She knows that Alison is hiding from a man who is already in Ravenswood and is waiting for the girls to lead him to Alison. She begs the girls to leave Rosewood, but Aria sees a costume shop and heads straight for it, not ready to miss the party and the chance to find out what happened to Alison.
And then it happens. A man walks into the lair and is furious that people have been inside it. A man we’ve trusted for four seasons. It’s Ezra.
Caleb, meanwhile, has been waiting in Rosewood to hear from Hanna. When it begins to get dark, he boards a bus for Ravenswood (Toby had yet to return Caleb’s car) and heads for the creepy town.
So, here’s what we know:
- ‘A’, who we now believe is Ezra, has been keeping tabs on the girls for years from his lair in Ravenswood
- Mrs. Grunwald, who was the last person to see Alison and swears the girl is still alive, may have telepathic skills and believes there is a man in Ravenswood who is out to get Alison. She warns the girls to leave the town immediately and not risk leading this man to Alison.
- Shana was in Ravenswood, but we don’t know why. She is new to Rosewood, so it’s possible that she is from Ravenswood.
- Caleb is heading to Ravenswood in the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars and this trip signifies him crossing into the new TV show.
- The Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars, which airs Tuesday, October 22 at 8E/5P on M3, will take place in Ravenswood. The series premiere of Ravenswood will air right after at 9E/6P on M3.
- Alison may or may not be the second red coat that saved Emily in Ravenswood, meaning that she may or may not be in the town.
- It’s going to be very difficult to not mix up Ravenswood and Rosewood in our recaps. So similar!
