We’ve seen Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port’s fame skyrocket thanks to their starring roles on MTV’s The Hills and The City, but what are the benefits for the extended cast of these shows? In an exclusive interview with MuchNews, Toronto native and musician Duncan Davies talks about his band, how he became to be known as Erin Lucas’s boyfriend on The City and how a disease called SARS brought them together.

“We met actually, weird story, years ago when SARS was in town. There was that SARS benefit,” Duncan recalled about his first encounter with Whitney’s pal Erin. “Then had a couple of years where we stayed in touch, then lost touch, and this past summer…we ran into each other and that was that.”

Duncan has so far appeared in two episodes of The City. When asked by VJ Devon Soltendieck about whether he has any problems appearing on the show, Duncan’s answer was candid. “Oh, I’ve got lots of problems with it,” he said with a laugh. The singer/songwriter was also honest about why he chose to participate: “Any opportunity to one, get exposure [and] two, hang out with my girlfriend – that’s the bottom line for me.”

The full-time musician draws inspiration from Terry Reid, Van Morrison and Neil Young. He’s upfront about what his band, The Duncan Davies Trio, must do to make it. “We’re at a kind of crossroads where it’s up to the new generation of musicians to take the industry by the balls and do what they want with it. And not expect some major [record label] to slap you in the face with a contract.”

Nowadays, both new and established artists are clamouring to have their music played on hit shows like Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy, so appearing on an MTV reality show could be seen as a smart move for Duncan’s career. When asked whether he’s receiving different kinds of exposure by being on The City, Duncan responded with a smile: “Well, you asked me for this interview.”
