Factory Records Founder Tony Wilson Dies

August 10th, 2007

Oh man, totally bummed! Tony Wilson died earlier today at the age of 57 of a heart attack, while undergoing treatment for kidney cancer.

If you don’t know, Tony Wilson founded the record label Factory Records in the late 70s/early 80s, which was responsible for spawning the careers of super influential bands like Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and James. With his label, Tony helped pioneer the popular “Manchester” sound & boost the city’s music scene.

He also founded the popular Manchester nightclub The Hacienda that hosted amazing live acts & various dance parties. In 1994 I went to Manchester on a trip (I was sooo into all those “Madchester” bands all throughout the 90s) and I got to go to The Hacienda before it was unceremoniously shut down a couple years later in 1997.

If you STILL have no idea who I’m talking about, go rent 24 Hour Party People, the semi-biography about Tony Wilson & Factory Records, to get schooled. SUCH a great movie! You might love it.
