Fan of Bright Lights and Sounds? Tron: Legacy Is For You!

December 17th, 2010

Starring: Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Jeff Bridges
Opens: December 17, 2010

After watching one of the battles in Tron: Legacy, complete with explosions, deaths, jumps, hits, and turns, I realize I really want to drive a motorcycle.

Tron jumps right back into the computer world it left behind in the 80s. But with some improvements: motorcycle races from the original have been updated with more daring stunts, dangerous moves and longer battles. They materialize out of light sticks (but you might think it’s a light saber at first like I did) and can become whatever you want them to be (including stealth fighter planes).

People are “de res’d” and literally “electronically” fall apart. Tron definitely maintains its credibility it’s a digital world that’s grown enormously since you were last there.

The film’s strong point was the introduction of the ISOs. Life always manages to find a way to exist and it’s no different in Tron: Legacy. When Kevin Flynn created the world he designed all the elements. Over time the computer world developed its own artificial intelligent race called the ISOs. But they’ve become an endangered species in one of the movie’s subplots.

One drawback on the world of Tron: I think in the 80s, skin-tight black suits and laser lights were cool effects to make you believe a virtual world existed. But in 2010? I think Tron needed a bit more colour and dimension. Everything was black and loaded with laser lights. There was no explanation to its mainframe, or how biological humans can exist in a digital world and vice versa.

The movie opened with a lot of potential to really hit Matrix-like levels of innovation (such as the ISOs) but failed to really deliver anything meaningful with any of these subplots. Had they spent less time introducing the world of Tron and more on developing one or two really interesting concepts within the world, the digital world that was the focus of the movie…would have had more of a focus.

The movie did do a good job making the war between computer and man biblical: we had a God-like figure in Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), and then his only begotten son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) as Jesus who returned to Tron to save the world. We have a villainous Pontius Pilate type ruler in CLU (a digitally rendered 20-years-younger Jeff Bridges) and a Judas-like backstabber in Zuse (Michael Sheen). And for love interests, we have Quorra (Olivia Wilde) as the Mary Magdalene of the group.

So, if you’re a sucker for bright lights and lasers you definitely won’t want to miss this!
