Feist was the big winner at this year’s Polaris Music Prize. Beating out tough contenders like Kathleen Edwards, Grimes, Cadence Weapon and previous winners Fucked, Feist’s album Metals took home top honours and a giant $30,000 novelty cheque.
The evening of performances from the short list nominees, including Cold Specks and Yamantaka//Sonic Youth, culminated in the announcement that Feist had won the prestigious award, an outcome that was most shocking to Feist herself. Hiding under her table, Feist eventually jumped on stage to accept the honour from last year’s winners Arcade Fire and hosts Lauren Toyota and Grant Lawrence. “Winning the Polaris tonight is a bit like getting a Valentine from the right boy in school,” she Feist. “It just has a sense of being small and personal and quaint and real and rooted.”
Check out pictures of Feist performing The Bad In Each Other and Caught A Long Wind and watch a special presentation of the 2012 Polaris Music Prize airing this Saturday at 10 pm ET on MUCH.
