First Spin: Avril Lavigne – Goodbye Lullaby

March 3rd, 2011

Listen to Avril Lavigne’s new album Goodbye Lullaby here before it’s released!

Need to Know: Though the album has been completed for over a year, it took two and a half years for Lavigne to release her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby. Since the release 2007′s party anthem disc The Best Damn Thing, Lavigne has expanded her resume, releasing a line of fragrances, designing her Abbey Dawn clothing line, and working with Tim Burton on the Alice In Wonderland soundtrack. For Goodbye Lullaby Lavigne teamed up with her ex-husband and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley, working together while the couple was still married and after they separated.

In 100 Words or So: After releasing the forgettable Best Damn Thing, which Avril admits she was drunk during the writing of, Lavigne’s Goodbye Lullaby reminds fans and critics why the world sat up and took notice of the 17-year old when she released Let Go as a singer and songwriter in 2002. With the bravado and vulnerability reminiscent of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, mixed with orchestral arraignments and acoustic simplicity, Goodbye Lullaby shows maturity and growth in Lavigne that many saw the promise of in Let Go. Avril said that she was waiting to get ‘life experiences’ before writing another album, a smart decision by the singer, which resulted in lyrics that are heart-wrenching, thoughtful and personal. Avril is back, and she was well worth the wait.
