Listen to Tre3s by Chikita Violenta here!
Need to know: Chikita Violenta is an indie rock band from Mexico City that has been jamming out since 2000. Signed to Arts & Crafts, the band has released two full length LPs and is set to release their third, titled TRE3S, on January 25. Chikita Violenta is comprised of André Velasco, Armando David, Eduardo Pacheco, Luis Arce and Esteban Suarez. They have collaborated with a number of indie bands in the past, including Apostle of Hustle, Super Furry Animals and Broken Social Scene. Although not the most ‘exposed’ band in the world, they are trying to make their mark with their indie-college rock. It helps that their sound is comparable to critically successful bands like Pavement, Sonic Youth and Tortoise.
In 100 words or so: Sprinkled with hints of psychedelia and ambience, TRE3S is grounded by a consistent lo-fi guitar strumming and the clashing beat of a drum kit, which turns out to be a really, really nice sounding combination. Each and every single track on the record makes sense and is catchy and memorable in its own right. For instance the second track, All I Need’s a Little More, an extremely Broken Social Scene-y tune, starts off with a brisk handclap and progresses into a booming, melodious composition as the degraded, lo-fi’d sounds of a snare drum, guitars and Arce’s voice kick in. If TRE3S is any indication of where Chikita Violenta is heading for their next album, we’re all in good shape.
Best tracks: All I Need’s a Little More, The Monster (Was Last Seen Approaching The Power Plant)
RIYL: Broken Social Scene, Apostle of Hustle, Tokyo Police Club, Tortoise, Sonic Youth
Rating: 7.6/10
