In 2012 we saw a resurgence of boy bands with One Direction and The Wanted taking over every pop chart in the world. The boy band domination shows no signs of slowing down in 2013 and we can’t wait to for the screams! Today we’re counting down the five biggest boy bands in 2012.
5. Emblem 3
When these three LA natives auditioned on X Factor with an original song, most people watching at home did a pre-emptive cringe. But seconds into the trio’s first audition, it was clear that Emblem 3 had something special. Fast forward to the final weeks in this season’s X Factor, and the boy band was still hanging tough in the competition. Now with rumours that X Factor judge and One Direction mentor Simon Cowell has signed Emblem 3, you can be sure that their rise to fame is about to get a lot faster.
4. Union J
With the huge success of One Direction, The Wanted and Ed Sheeran in 2012, North American fans are eager for more pop acts to cross the pond. X Factor UK finalists Union J are already rumoured to be stiff competition for the untouchable One Direction boys, and their recent signing with Sony Music means that they’ll get the international push they need to possibly become the world’s biggest boy band.
3. The Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers have been very vocal about their return to the studio as a trio, even scheduling performances before their new album is finished. Nick Jonas made headlines earlier this year when he and his brothers performed a track that even Miley Cyrus admitted was aimed at her, with the young Jo Bro singing about his regret over losing his teenage girlfriend. If the new disc contains a song by Joe Jonas singing about his ex Taylor Swift, you can bet this disc will be a best seller.
2. The Wanted
From their Twitter beefs with One Direction to their ‘Free Lindsay’ t-shirts in support of Lindsay Lohan to their bra-flinging performance at The Big Jingle, we can’t get enough of The Wanted. Their first North American album is set to be released early in the new year and is sure to be the biggest threat to One Direction on the charts.
1. One Direction
The seemingly untouchable One Direction have had a year that most singers can’t even dream of. Their sophomore album Take Me Home flew up the charts, their upcoming tour sold out in minutes and required extra dates added, and their romantic lives seem to be strong (Haylor 2013, y’all). While a new crop of boy bands will be nipping at their heels in 2013, it’s difficult to believe that anyone will be able to touch the success of One Direction.
