Music fans may only know of Jared Leto as the frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars, but his latest buzz surrounding his potential Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club has brought the spotlight back on Leto’s acting career. And what an acting career this man has!
For those who are less in-the-know about Jared Leto, the actor, here are five facts you should know ASAP:
He will always be Jordan Catalano to us.
One of Jared Leto’s most memorable roles was in the cult hit, My So-Called Life. Playing bad boy Jordan Catalano, he romances Angela Chase played by Homeland’s Claire Danes. If you were around during the My So-Called Life days, you most definitely had posters of Jordan Catalano on your walls.
He actually has a really impressive filmography.
Jared Leto has been a number of critically acclaimed films including Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, Girl, Interrupted and American Psycho. Sure, he’s been in a few forgettable films as well — remember Panic Room or Phone Booth?? — but his praises outweighed his criticism, which is sometimes not the case with his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars… So take some time off, flip through Netflix and catch up on some Leto classics!
He took a five year hiatus from acting.
After his last role in 2009′s Mr. Nobody, Leto didn’t return to film again till last year’s acclaimed Dallas Buyers Club for which he is now primed to win an Oscar for. In an interview, Leto admitted that he originally ignored the script for Dallas Buyers Club because he wasn’t interested in doing films anymore, but he returned to it and fell in love with the film. “There were too many elements, I had to be a part of it,” he said.
He narrated a documentary.
Jared Leto doesn’t only flex his voice in his music, he also narrated a documentary in 2011. TT3D: Closer to the Edge follows the world famous annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle race in the Isle of Man and we’re not entirely sure how Leto fits into this, but we’d be down for watching him narrate anything. Leto has also lent his voice to narrating the 2006 TV documentary, The Armenian Genocide.
He’s also a director and producer.
This man really is the jack of all trades, rounding himself off as a director and producer for his band’s music videos as well as the 2012 film documentary Artifact as well as executive producing 2007′s Chapter 27 and co-producing 2001′s Sol Goode.
