Toronto hardcore envelope pushers F**ked Up have announced the release date of their highly anticipated follow-up to their Polaris Music Prize-winning album,. According to guitarist Mike Haliechuck’s blog, David Comes to Life will drop on June 7th.
Described as a “rock opera set in a fictional British town during the Thatcher administration,” the band have revealed a poster that features Ian Russell from $100 as the titular character and a poem for the character written by Haliechuck. According to frontman Damian Abraham, a poem was written for each character on the album.
David Comes to Life will be accompanied by a compilation of fictional bands from said fictional town and will include songs by Danko Jones, A.C. Newman, Cloud Nothings, Simone Schmidt ($100), Brendan Radigan (Mind Eraser, the Rival Mob) and every member of F**ked Up, who will each sing their own song.
The album will be released by Matador Records as an LP of 18 songs, but there will also be a five-song 12″ featuring character sketches and a two-song 7″ with one about the town and another about the factory that the story is set in.
Damian summed up the album to Pitchfork, saying, “It’s about a guy, David, who works at a light bulb factory. He falls in love with this activist. She subsequently dies during an accident. You never really find out what the accident is because we couldn’t think of it [laughs]. Then David’s on trial. There’s this prosecutor who was secretly in love with the activist but is also aware that he’s in a play. Then it gets really heady and drugged-out.”
