Flashing Lights: Too Brutal?

February 14th, 2008

FACT: “Flashing Lights” is one of the best songs on Kanye’s Graduation album - dramatic, bold and beautiful (much like a soap opera, also called The Bold and The Beautiful).

What would you expect from a literal, glossy translation of the song? Couture? Glamour? Sheen and shine? … Flashing lights? It almost seems too easy. But when Kanye teams up with someone like Spike Jonze to direct a video, you’re going to get anything but a predictable, literal translation of the song. And that’s an understatement. To wit:

*Gape*

I never would have expected that. But as Jenifa says, the video actually works with the song - a woman scorned, fed up with being over-sexualized, perhaps? But I wince when I watch the ending (which, by the way, cuts off the song, but I take that as an artistic choice) - so brutal!

What do you think? Is this video too graphic for TV?
