Foo Fighters At The Hummingbird Centre

August 24th, 2006

The day arrived & I had no ticket…which is not totally usual for me. I wasn’t going to fight for one but I also wasn’t going to pay some scalper $300 for the privilege. Lucky for me a dear friend works for Foos and emailed about 2 hours before show time to say there was a single tix & pass at the door in my name. Whee!

That was last night. Today I am inspired.

I know you know how awesome Foo Fighters are. So I will tell you only what I saw last night. They are touring with an acoustic line-up. No electric guitars on this stage baby. The 4 main guys; Dave, Taylor, Chris & Nate, plus 4 others handling keys, percussion, squeezebox, violin, mandolin, vox, cowbell, castanets, triangle & even Pat Smear on guitar! I almost shed a tear watching him smile and strum along to “Big Me”. Ahh it was 1995 all over again… mentos and all.

Dave Grohl was in top form. Dude is f’in hilarious. This was a comedy routine set to amazing music. He told this unbelievable story about touring Toronto in his pre-Nirvana band Scream. They were told to sound check at noon, which was bizarre because the gig wasn’t until midnight. Turns out Iggy Pop was having a record release at the same venue & Scream had to set up for their show, then get the heck out until Iggy’s party was over. Well in a twist of fate, Iggy needed a drummer and a bass player that night & Dave and his bud got the call. 19 years old and he’s jamming with a legend…In Toronto! Good memories for Dave led to great stories for the fans. I’ve NEVER heard him speak publicly about the early days with Kurt & Krist in Nirvana. Last night he did. Beautifully. The audience was on the edge of their seats and the energy in the Hummingbird Centre was electric…which was amazing for an acoustic gig.

Highlights: My Hero, Everlong, Times Like These, Drew pulling a cowbell out of thin air & dancing for the delight of all… cracking Dave up repeatedly. Frank Black! He opened the show without a word, just his unlikely rock star presence and that voice that takes you back to high school summer nights. Well my high school anyway. Oh and that pass came in handy later…thanks Gus!

Lowlights: Time to drop a little Sloan kids. “It’s not the band I hate, it’s their fans.” Frat boys & drunk party girls who just don’t know how to conduct themselves in a theatre. I’m not going to say you ruined this for me. But to that one female freak who kept screaming “take off your pants” and “do me Dave” during his breathtaking Nirvana story…you don’t deserve to take up a seat while real fans wait in the rain (I’m speculating here that there were some poor kids left outside and it did rain at some point last night). It’s not your show people. It’s theirs, and it was gorgeous.

I laughed and sang aloud for 2 hours.

Don’t miss the Foos when they come back through Canada this to warm up the stage for Bob Dylan. I’m personally starting a campaign from the inside to host a Foo’s I&I in November. Who’s with me?!
