Frank Ocean has opened up the opportunity for people in the R&B and hip hop community to talk more openly about their sexuality through leading by example. Frank took to his personal website and posted a letter of thanks, written in December 2011, that was meant to live in the liner notes for his upcoming album Channel Orange. The letter recounted the experience of his first love with another man. Frank wrote, “Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost… Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life.”
Talking publicly about sexual orientation within a genre of music where homosexuality is a typically reserved topic is a brave and bold move by Frank Ocean and his honesty will stand as a milestone within the community. It is important to keep the conversation going, so let us know what you think in the comments section below and we have Frank Ocean’s video for Swim Good right here.
