On Friday night as part of my two day Franztravaganza of sorts, I headed to 888 Yonge to catch an interview and performance with Franz Ferdinand, as part of a two-tiered special coming up on MTV Canada. The guys chatted with MTV hosts Daryn & Nicole before getting down to business - performing six new songs (!) from their upcoming album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. You can catch the interview and performance of their new single Ulysses on MTV Live tonight (Tuesday!) at 6pm ET.
But if you want to hear the other five songs that a special group of us (that is, anyone who was at the studio on Friday!) got to preview, you’ll have to stay tuned for MTV’s The Leak Live sometime in January closer to the album release date. I’ve gotta say, the new songs sound really, really great and it was such a pleasure to hear them performed in one of the best sounding ‘venues’ in Toronto.
Setlist:
Ulysses
Live Alone
No You Girls (formerly known as Kiss Me Katherine)
Bite Hard
Turn It On
What She Came For
The last song in particular, as I mentioned in my review of Thursday’s show at Lee’s Palace, is electrifying. It’s probably my favourite Franz Ferdinand song to date!
P.S.: When did Nick become such a supercutie? I love the way he holds his guitar…sweet technique, mein freund.

I also went to Lee’s Palace & The Masonic Temple for two days of Franz. And it was indeed spectacular and made me want to see them again/get my hands on the new album.
… January can’t come quickly enough.
What She Came For is a great song, particularly live. In fact, all of the songs are.
It also really helps that they’re all such nice, down to earth, funny guys. Nick and Alex came out afterwards and chatted with a bunch of fans.
Sigh.
Rah rah oo la la rama ma la la gaga!

I was there for their performance and they are NOT KIDDING when they say that “Tonight” would be an album that you:
1)Can play in the clubs.
I know that that has always been one of their musical aims (”Music for girls to dance to”) but I was grooving with the majority of people on the floor, and I didn’t even know the songs yet!
2)Would have to prepare for a night of, as Alex put it, hedonism.
‘Nuff said.
