Franz Ferdinand @ The Kool Haus

May 5th, 2009

Remember when Franz Ferdinand said that they’re new album would be

“…music of the night: to fling yourself around your room to as you psyche yourself for a night of hedonism, for the dance-floor, flirtation, for your desolate heart-stop, for losing it and loving losing it, for the chemical surge in your bloodstream”?

Last night’s show came pretty close to this.

The sold out crowd seemed pretty chill as Canadian boys Born Ruffians opened, but as soon as the dapper Franz Ferdinand gentelmen walked on stage (Nick McCarthy in crutches), everyone went crazy! Staring off with No You Girls, projections of bright red lips puckered in the background. Throughout the night different images and videos would flash behind the band, adding to the whole, how should I put it… electrically seductive atmosphere of the show? Frontman Alex Kapranos himself said he could “feel the love”.

Playing new songs such as Live Alone, and Turn It On, as well as old favorites like Michael, and Tell Her Tonight, everyone was dancing and getting a little sweaty! Kinda gross, but still very fun! Also fun was a “List of requests” made by some Franz fans that had found its way onstage. Alex read some of it aloud, requests including “All of your first album. All of your second album. Every song you’ve ever written. Bob rapping the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme song.” Although we all pleaded to Bob there was no luck with that last request.

Franz Ferdinand have been said to have pulsing energy throughout shows and this one was no exception. Many theatrical arm movements, hip thrusts, and dance moves were showcased, as well as behind the head guitar playing and jumps. And stage diving. This energy carried into their songs turning 40′ into in approximately 8 minute dance-y jam. They also brought out Born Ruffians to add to the already insane instrumental on Lucid Dreams. The fact that during the encore, Alex had to ice his hand between and during songs is a testament to just how much this band gives in a performance. I mentioned it earlier but Nick (keyboards and guitar) was on crutches for the whole show!

Quite the party for a Monday night.
