From Page Turners To Channel Surfers!

December 30th, 2010

Serial killers. Blair Waldorf. Vampires. “A”. What do all of these random characters have in common? If you said they star in some of televisions top-rated series….you’d be wrong. Okay, you’d be right. But that’s not the answer I was going for.

They were all stars of “I-can’t-put-this-book-down-it’s-so-damn-good” page turners! And just in time for Jan. 2nd’s Pretty Little Liars marathon and the premiere of its new season on Monday (exclusively on Much! Whoop Whoop!), we give you an ode to the best book-turned-TV series currently on the airwaves!

You’ll be surprised how many of your favourite shows make this list!

Gossip Girl

It was the first book in this series (currently up to 11 books and two spin-off series) by Cecily von Ziegesar that first introduced us to life on the Upper East Side. But while we all love to marvel at who Serena will choose (Dan or Nate) or Blair’s antics, there are a lot of changes that didn’t make it to the TV series. In the novels, Blair is the main star of the stories. It’s Nate that goes back and forth between Serena and Blair (instead of Serena). Erik van der Woodsen is older in the books and Chuck is a secondary character. Wow. I’m glad they beefed up his role on the show!

Dexter

Whoa. Talk about a show premise; this series follows the life of Dexter Morgan, a forensic analyst for the Miami police who moonlights as a serial killer targeting criminals who got away with murder. Now that’s a show! And it’s also a collection of novels by Jeff Lindsay. Originally, the first season was modeled after the first novel, but as time went on (and novels are harder to publish versus episodes) the show has evolved and strayed away from later stories in the book series.

The Vampire Diaries

Originally a four-part series published in the early nineties, the amount of attention the television series created stirred the author, L.J. Smith, to bring the characters back for six more novels. The original series featured a blonde-haired Elena who was more of a manipulative b***h than the nice person they made her on the show. Matt is still the sweet heart and Bonnie is still the witch. Caroline is totally different than in the books (she’s continually used as a toy by Damon in the series) and they completely excluded a main character from the books (but rumour is they may introduce the character of “Meredith” later on…she ends up in a relationship with Alaric…but she’s a student!).

Pretty Little Liars

The biggest shocker of the book-to-TV series adaption is the fact that “A” is different than the person from the books. So HA to all the people who tried to post spoilers on the internet! But that leaves us wondering who “A” could be now with the amount of possibilities the show is offering (Melissa? Jenna? Toby? Spencer?). The books, written by Sara Shepard, move at bit of a slower pace, but most of the storylines have remained the same (so far….). And with eight books under her belt and four more to come (Twisted will be out July 2011) who knows what’s in store for our girls!

True Blood

Let me tell you how I would never have thought this series was based on a set of novels (and if you’ve ever watched it you would agree with me!). But I have to remember it’s produced by HBO so it was guaranteed to be racy and provocative. Called The Southern Vampire Mysteries and written by Charlaine Harris the stories follow the life of Sookie Stackhouse and the (arguably) realistic approach to mysterious creatures (vampires, werewolves, vampires, shapeshifters, witches, fairies, telepaths) that no longer live in secret – they let humans know they exist. The series was originally supposed to be ten novels but the author has agreed to write three more. And as the show continues, more characters and elements from the series are incorporated.

The Walking Dead

In the age of graphic novels, it was only a matter of time before we got a TV series from a comic book. The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman follows a group of survivors after a “zombie apocalypse” hits the earth. It won the awards for best continuing series at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego, and was recently turned into a show this Hallowe’en. With only a meager six episodes and premiering on AMC (home to Mad Men and Breaking Bad) the show as a huge, expected hit and a second season its on its way (with 13 episodes). The first season was emotional, realistic, gory, and scary all at the same time!

Hellcats

Not a traditional adaptation like the other shows in this list, Hellcats is loosely based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by journalist Kate Torgovnick. The author follows three university cheerleading squads from tryouts to national championships for the 2006-2007 season. Tom Welling AKA Superman decided this in-depth look was so cool (AKA HOT) he turned it into a show. Now we’ve got a fictionalized account of the real world of cheerleading. And lots of eye candy. RAH RAH RAH!
