We’ve all seen Lady Gaga’s mouth-watering, PETA-baiting meat dress. An extension of her scandalous “meatkini” she sported on the cover of Japanese Vogue, Gaga wore it proudly Sunday night at the MTV VMAs. As if she needed more attention, the dress kind of stole the show.
The designer behind the meaty dress, Franc Fernandez, also worked on Gaga’s “Telephone” video and said the dress didn’t take that long to make (how could it, the meat would have to be fresh, right?). “I was approached by [fellow fashion stylist] Nicola Formichetti to create the look. It was planned over a week period,” Fernandez explains. “It’s always a pleasure working with Nicola and Gaga, the times I have. The process is very easy and quick.
Fernandez went on to say that despite the materials used, it never rotted. “She wore it for as long as it was seen on TV, with some additional press photos and for the Ellen show,” he says. “There’s been a big debate of whether it smelled or rotted under the lights. Gaga herself said it smelled good, because it smelled like meat. I chose the right cuts to make sure the dress kept well.”
If you’re thinking of making your own meat dress, Fernandez says the process is pretty simple: “Go to your butcher, get some good cuts and start sewing,”
