Gene Simmons - Rock God or Just Plain Narcissistic?

July 24th, 2007

I was watching Gene Simmons Family Jewels last night. After catching it a handful of times, I’ve determined that the best part about the show is his kids. I think his son Nick is hilarious and probably has enough charm and talent to have his own career outside of the show. He even pulls off the whole Jim Morrison look he’s goin’ for. Gene’s daughter Sophie is quite likeable, and at 14, is probably way too gorgeous for someone her age. Modeling and acting will probably ensue.

Is Gene showcasing his family in this mediocre show so that he can ensure his kids’ success? Or is it just to squeeze more easy money out of the television medium? Probably both.

But Gene ruins the show himself in my opinion. His pomposity is unbearable and his greasy Darth Vader helmet-hair is growing harder and harder to look at!

I recognize that KISS is a legendary band and has made a huge mark on pop culture, but the blatant milking of the “reality” genre and Gene’s overblown expectations of audience interest are going to make this show grow old…fast.

It’s entertaining enough to watch when there’s nothing else on, but I liked it a lot better when it was called The Osbournes!

  1. Gene simmons and Kiss were some of the first post-Vietnam rock stars.

I saw his interview basically stating that Rock is just about partying and when its about issues it just kills the buzz. Alice Cooper said the same thing. @$$holes. They laid the groundwork for “hair metal”, not in how they look and act but how they sound.

  4. Gene is pompous but the show is about the whole family. If he wasn’t in it then people would get the wrong idea about him and his family, and the show would lose viewers. Also the show is good and i know lots of people who watch it!

  5. I haven’t seen it yet since I don’t have a TV, but my bf watches it and says it’s good. Although that isn’t necessarily true.

  6. It’s just that Gene Simmons himself is pretty hard to take in large doses.

I know that Gene uses his legendary ego as his main shtick. It is the central theme to every episode - a convenient target for family members to take shots at, and a “plot device” that creates most of the situations that occur in the show. I believe that although the dialogue is ad-libbed, the show is far more structured than The Osbournes, and is therefore only borderline “reality t.v.” Quite often I find myself feeling embarrassed for those on camera.

Still, I still seem to stop when I flick by… because I WANT to like it!

  7. i love the kids, they’re so smart and witty.

Though I agree with Jodie that the situations are scripted, i don’t feel at all embarrassed for those on camera — what do you mean by that?

  8. Just what I said! Sometimes I feel like they are humiliating themselves (not that I should care) when there are scenes that are obviously fake or scripted (i.e. those phony “surprised” reactions that they must do 5 or 6 times from different angles?).

This is not unique to Family Jewels - I feel embarrassed for most people in reality shows.

    Maybe it’s just me?
