GG Question: Can A Guy And A Girl Just “Be Friends”?

Dan and Blair. Blair and Dan. Does Gossip Girl know how to tease us or what? Before I starting shouting all the reasons Blair and Dan should be a couple…I have to wonder, can they actually remain friends?
Why I pose this question – you almost never see a guy and girl be close friends unless one of them is gay. So can two heterosexual-opposite-sex friends actually be close friends? Does that happen anymore?
Or does the guy/girl eventually develop feelings for his BFF?
